Many streets in Ho Chi Minh City were submerged by rainwater on June 14, causing motorbikes to break down and hindering commutes.
Nearly VND23 trillion has been spent to combat flooding in HCMC during the 2008-2018 period, but antiflooding efforts remain ineffective.
High tide starting from the weekends has caused floods in many southern localities, including Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho city.
Ho Chi Minh City plans to spend hundreds of billions of VND on building more than 100 reservoirs to store rainwater and control flooding by 2020 under a flood-control programme.
River erosion and high tide have made great impact on dwellers’ lives and production; accordingly, HCM City authorities have drawn up embankment construction projects to regulate water level and drainage.
The HCMC government has proposed a project to manage the flood risk in the city, worth an estimated US$19 million, to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
Authorities in HCM City have outlined stronger flood-prevention measures as heavy rains and high tides continue to cause severe flooding.
