The reservoir, with a designed capacity of nearly 90 million cubic metres, has total investment of VND2.14 trillion (US$93 million).

The project aims to improve irrigation for agricultural production and water supplies for thousands of local people.

The Irrigation Construction and Investment Management Board 6 under MARD is acting as the investor and the provinical Agriculture and Rural Development Project Management Board is responsible for the compensation, support and resettlement for local people.

Pham Van Nam, chairman of An Lao District People’s Committee, said the reservoir needed over 1,300ha of land which meant that 443 ethnic H’re households must be relocated.

They would be resettled in An Trung and An Hung communes.

MARD deputy minister Hoang Van Thang said construction quality, labour and fire safety would be ensured as well as environmental sanitation.

The deputy minister also asked the People’s Committee and relevant units to carry out site clearance, relocation and resettlements.

The project is expected to boost socio-economic development while improving the local ecosystem and environment in An Lao, Hoai An, Hoai Nhon and Phu My.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2021.
