A woman who stole assets worth over half a billion Vietnamese dong (approximately US$21,000) from her foreign lover has been apprehended by police after attempting to flee.
On December 31, the Criminal Police Investigation Department of Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, detained Ha Thi Anh Nguyet (43 years old, originally from Quang Ninh) for further investigation. The case will be transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department for processing on charges of theft.
On December 27, Mr. N., a 63-year-old Australian national, reported to the Binh Chanh District Police that he had been stolen.
His missing valuables included cash, gold jewelry, and a mobile phone, amounting to over VND 500 million (approximately USD 21,000).
Mr. N. suspected the perpetrator to be Nguyet, a woman he had recently started dating.
After receiving the report, Binh Chanh District Police launched an investigation. They examined the crime scene, collected witness statements, and quickly identified Nguyet as the suspect.
Nguyet had already fled northward.
Investigators traced her movements and successfully apprehended her.
During interrogation, Nguyet admitted to exploiting Mr. N.'s trust to steal his valuables before fleeing. She confessed to selling some of the stolen items and depositing the proceeds into her bank account.
In an effort to evade police detection, Nguyet frequently switched vehicles during her escape to the north.
Recovered assets have been returned to Mr. N. by the Binh Chanh District Police.
