While the holiday is a golden time, it is a tough period for their parents. Many parents in cities plan to keep their children indoors all day and not let them go out for fear for insecurity.

Thuy believes the summer is the time for students to relax after a hard academic year, so she doesn’t intend to send the boy to extra classes. However, her husband thinks leaving the boy with teachers is the safest solution.

Thuy said she was surprised when her husband, who grew up in a small village and liked swimming as a child, does not want to send his son to his home village in summer.

“There are too many risks there. I mean the lakes, rivers and streams,” he said.

Spending summer at pagodas could also be a good choice. “Summer semester” at pagodas aims to inspire young people to think about traditions, and teach love, morality and awareness about life issues.

However, Hoang Tu, a parent in Thanh Xuan district, failed with his plan for his child. Since his 9-year-old boy spends most of his free time watching TV and playing games, Tu decided to send the boy to a 2-week training course at a pagoda in Hanoi.

However, the boy could not bear the sudden changes in daily activities and was also tired of the lessons about Buddhism and sitting in meditation. He insisted to leave the training courses just after three days.

An education expert commented that urban parents tend to bring their children to life skill classes in summer because they think their children, who spend all of their time on lworking with computers, lack important skills.

Ha Trung, a parent in Dong Da district, who called himself a ‘modern father’, decided that his daughter needs to relax in the summer holiday, and attend music and dancing classes.

“She is quite mischievous. So I decided to send her to the dancing class so that she can become more feminine,” Trung explained.

However, Trung’s plan failed. The girl whose interests and hobbies are not in music or dance decided to drop out, saying she had a headache and sore throat. As a result, Trung wasted nearly VND10 million as he could not get the tuition back.
