Those are articles entitled “Automatic strain sensor design via active learning and data augmentation for soft machines” by Dr. Truong Van Tien and his colleagues at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, the National University of Singapore and the University of Maryland, in the journal Nature Machine intelligence in January and “NN-based Predictive model for a Batoid-inspired Soft Robot” in the journal IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters in April.
These articles were then cited or republished by many technology sites in the US such as Techxplore, Techbriefs, Eurekalert, Azorobotics, and Spacedaily.
Dr. Truong Van Tien was a student of aeronautical engineering of the HCM City University of Technology. Graduating in 2008, he got a PhD scholarship in aeronautical and information engineering in Korea.
In 2010, Tien went to the US to do research with the project he proposed, which was co-funded by the US and South Korean Departments of Defense.
After that, three American universities, including Drexel University, Washington State University and Brown University, agreed to grant him scholarships to continue his PhD research in the US. However, Tien decided to stay in Korea to complete the program under the guidance of a professor in Korea and a professor in the US.
After graduating with a doctorate in 2013, Tien was invited to work at the National University of Singapore. At the end of 2017, he moved to work at Queen's University, Canada.
In 2018, Dr. Tien decided to return to Singapore to work as a senior expert at the SUTD-MIT International Design Center, which was established by the Singapore University of Design and Engineering and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA).
He has been invited to work in France, Sweden, and the world's largest wind energy institute - DTU wind Enery of the Technical University of Denmark.
After more than 12 years working in Singapore, USA, Canada and Korea, Dr. Tien returned home at the end of 2020 to work for Coherent Vietnam.
Dr. Truong Van Tien has worked on many projects on new material technology, advanced manufacturing technology, robotics, AI applications, laser systems for civil and military applications. His previous studies were also reported by American technology news sites for breakthroughs in production applications and won many awards for science and creativity.
