VN nearly swept from Asian badminton champs

Most Vietnamese competitors have been ousted from the Dong Feng Citroen Badminton Asia Championships in China.

Vu Thi Trang found a little hope against host rival Xuerui Li, who is seeded No 1 in the second round of the women's singles event.

After losing rapidly 9-21 in the first set, Trang bounded back and beat world No 3 21-11 in the second. However Li proved her power to dominate the third set winning 21-13.

In the men's singles, Nguyen Tien Minh found no solution against No 5 seed Tien Chen Chou of Chinese Taipei, losing 19-21, 15-21.

His teammate Duong Bao Duc and Nguyen Hoang Nam were defeated 21-15, 21-11 by South Korean Kim Gi-jung and Kim Sa-rang in only 24 minutes.

They will play No 3 duo Chen Xu and Jin Ma today, April 23.

Duc wins U12 singles at national tennis event

Vu Ha Minh Duc of Ha Noi won U12's singles at the National Men's Tennis Championships, which concluded in Dak Nong Province yesterday, April 22.

Duc readily beat Vu Thanh Tung of Vinh Phuc in just two sets 4-1, 4-0 for the gold. Cao Duong Dai of Binh Duong and Hanoian Vu Thai Nam shared the bronze medal.

Tu Le Khanh Duy of Binh Duong took gold in the U14's singles after besting Nguyen Hoang Minh of Ha Noi 6-2, 6-4. The bronze medal went to both Nguyen Duy Nam of Vinh Phuc, and Tran Cao Son of Ninh Binh.

In the U16's singles final, Nguyen Van Phuong of Binh Duong defeated Le Trung Tinh of the Military team 7-5, 6-3.

In the over-18's singles final, the Military team's Tran Hoang Anh Khoa also lost to Pham Minh Tuan of Da Nang.

Dung wins 12th stage of TV cycling cup

Le Anh Dung won the 12th stage of the 27th HCM City Television Cycling Cup and Nguyen Minh Viet won yesterday's yellow jersey.

Dung clocked a top speed of 38.917 kmph during the 101km stage from Quy Nhon to Tuy Hoa City, completing the stage in two hours, 35 minutes and 43 seconds.

Phan Tuan Vu of VTV Can Tho and Ho Hoang Son of Thanh Son Hoa Nong finished second and third, respectively.

Viet of VTV, Binh Duong defended his yellow jersey for best overall time with at total 31:06.13 after 12 stages.

In team rankings, Gao Hat Ngoc Troi took the lead with a combined time of 96:21.50, followed by Military Zone 7 and Domesco Pharmacy Dong Thap. Today, cyclists will continue the 131km race from Tuy Hoa to Nha Trang City.
