Vietnamese cuisine has once again made its mark on the global culinary map, securing 12 out of 16 spots in Taste Atlas' latest ranking of the best sandwiches and wraps in Southeast Asia.
Vietnam’s banh mi takes the top three spots
According to Taste Atlas, a renowned food guide based in Zagreb, Croatia, the top three positions in its list of the region’s best sandwiches and wraps are all variations of Vietnam’s famous banh mi.
Taste Atlas describes banh mi as an iconic Vietnamese delicacy, with regional variations offering unique flavors while maintaining the signature crispy, golden baguette.
The most popular version consists of a pork liver pâté filling, paired with Vietnamese ham (cha lua), pickled carrots, cilantro, sauces, and other ingredients.
Another favorite variation features grilled pork, offering a delightful combination of crunchy bread and fresh, flavorful toppings.
Following the classic banh mi, two other Vietnamese variations secured second and third place: banh mi thit (Vietnamese cold cuts sandwich) and banh mi heo quay (roast pork sandwich).
Other Vietnamese favorites on the list

Vietnamese cuisine was further represented with multiple banh mi variations, including banh mi ca moi (sardine sandwich), banh mi cha ca (fried fish cake sandwich), banh mi gio thu (head cheese sandwich), banh mi xiu mai (meatball sandwich), and banh mi op la (fried egg sandwich).
Additionally, bo bia (Vietnamese-style spring rolls) was recognized as one of Southeast Asia’s most beloved street foods.
Among the remaining four non-Vietnamese dishes on the list, Taste Atlas included Singapore’s kaya toast and roti john, Malaysia’s popiah, and Thailand’s khao phan phak.
