Vietnam's young tennis star advances to second round

Rising Vietnamese tennis star Ly Hoang Nam progressed to the second round of the ITF junior tennis championships, which is taking place in Bangkok, Thailand.

Nam, who is seeded No 2 at the tournament, overcame Igor Barzasekov of Turkmenistan 6-4, 6-3 in the first round yesterday.

Nam will face Harper Mitchell of Australia in the second round. Harper beat Rakpuangchon Vorachon of Thailand 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2.

This is the 16-year-olds first tournament since he successfully defended his title at the national tennis championships early this month.

Viet Nam set for Wushu champs

Viet Nam will take part in the World Wushu Championships in Malaysia starting next week.

Viet Nam's top athletes include world champion Nguyen Thanh Tung, ASIAD bronze medallist Nguyen Manh Quyen and Asian silver medallist Nguyen Thuy Vi.

Competitions will include taolu (performance) and sanda (combat).

The 12th tournament will kick off on October 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium.

National Pencak Silat Championships open in Hai Duong

More than 270 martial artists representing 24 teams from across the country are competing at the 2013 National Pencak Silat Championships, underway in the northern province of Hai Duong until October 27.

The athletes contend for titles in demonstration (Seni) and combat (Tanding) events in 11 men’s weight classes, between 45kg and over-110kg, and eight women’s weight categories, ranging from 45kg to over-75kg.

The annual tournament provides a good opportunity for the fighters to hone their skills, gain experience and vie for slots in the national pencak silat team.

Hanoi took top honours at last year’s event, winning a total of eight gold, one silver and four bronze medals. Ho Chi Minh City were runners-up with three gold, three silver and five bronze medals, followed by Hai Duong with two gold and three silver medals.
