Despite the country’s status as one of the world’s leading rice exporters, Vietnam is expected to spend nearly US$1 billion on rice imports for processing this year.
Vietnam, known for its robust rice production, has seen a dramatic increase in rice imports in 2024, with expenditures nearing $850 million within the first eight months.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the World Bank are discussing a method on how to pay rice farmers for carbon credits.
A regional forum on low-emission rice farming kicked off in Hanoi on September 9, aiming to promote cooperation, build consensus, and seek viable solutions to address challenges in developing a sustainable rice value chain across landscapes.
Sustainable rice farming models in Mekong Delta localities have delivered promising results, taking strides toward more eco-friendly and profitable agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said.
Approximately 2.7 billion USD is required from various funding sources to implement a project on developing 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice in association with green growth in the Mekong Delta region by 2030.
