Minh defeated No. 10 seed Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia 21-11, 21-15 in the men’s singles event yesterday. He will face another Indonesian Enzi Shafira in the last-eight round.
Trang faced no difficulty in registering a 21-14, 21-10 win over Maharani Sekar Batari of Indonesia. Her next rival will be Asty Dwi Widyaningrum also from Indonesia.
Sixth-seeded Vietnamese Nguyen Thuy Linh also advanced to the quarter-finals. She will play No. 3 seed Chen Su Yu of Chinese Taipei.
Duo Do Tuan Duc and Pham Hong Nam sprang a surprise victory, as they came from behind to beat No. 4 seed Arjun M.R and Ramchandran of India to enter the quarter-finals round of the men’s doubles.
The Vietnamese pair will play No. 8 seeds Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Jagdish Singh of Malaysia at the Cau Giay Gymnasium today.
The Hanoi Challenge tournament is an annual event with a prize money of US$20,000, an increase of some 13 per cent over last year. This year the tournament is scheduled to conclude on Sunday.
