According to the data, in the 2022/23 academic year there were a total of 1,057,188 international students at higher education institutions in the US.

The number of Vietnamese students attending US universities and colleges has increased by 5.7%, reaching 21,900 in the 2022/23 academic year.

This also marks the first increase after three consecutive years of decline due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At present, Vietnam remains the second-leading place of origin for international students at community colleges, comprising 7.6% of all international community college students and the fourth largest source of international undergraduate students with 14,295 students.

Science, technology, engineering, and maths, along with business and management studies, remain top areas of study in the US for Vietnamese students.

Furthermore, Vietnamese students pursuing STEM and business/management majors account for 47.6% and 24.7%, respectively.

Overall, the US has seen a two-year rebound in the number of international students following the pandemic, recording over 14% growth in new enrollments in the 2022/23 academic year.

This increase was felt across the US, with 48 out of 50 states experiencing growth. International students now make up about 6% of enrolled students across US campuses with more than one million students from more than 230 countries.

As the Open Doors’ data shows, education is a major pillar in Vietnam – US relations.

According to information provided by the US Embassy in Hanoi, the US Mission to Vietnam is fully committed to deepening education ties in line with the 2023 Joint Leaders’ Statement on the elevation of Vietnam – US relations to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
