The results of the Vietnamese students in the 2024 ASEAN Cybersecurity Skills Competition, hosted by the ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Capacity Building Centre, were shared by the Vietnam Information Security Association (VNISA) with VietNamNet reporters.
Held online on July 25, the competition was organized in coordination with Thailand’s National Cyber Security Agency. According to the competition's rules, each ASEAN member country could send up to 30 individuals under the age of 26 to participate. With the approval of the Ministry of Information and Communications, VNISA and the Information Security Authority selected 30 students from eight universities across Vietnam to compete.
Competing against over 200 cybersecurity enthusiasts from nine other ASEAN countries, the 30 Vietnamese students took on online challenges in areas such as Network, Crypto, Reverse Engineering, Programming, Miscellaneous, and Puzzle.
The final results were impressive, with Vietnamese students achieving high scores. Remarkably, seven of the top ten spots were claimed by Vietnamese students.
Leading the competition were Nguyen Hoang Huy and Dinh Thai Son from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, followed by four students from FPT University and one from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. All top 10 contestants received certificates from the ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Capacity Building Centre.
Nguyen Hoang Huy and Dinh Thai Son, who secured the top two positions, are members of the Nu_RobinHust team from Hanoi University of Science and Technology. This team previously won third place in the ASEAN 2023 Student Information Security Contest and second place in the Cyber SEA Game 2023.
VNISA and the Information Security Authority selected the 30 participants for the ASEAN 2024 Cybersecurity Skills Competition from the best teams in the final round of the ASEAN 2023 Student Information Security Contest.
The success of Vietnamese students in the ASEAN 2024 Cybersecurity Skills Competition reaffirms the quality of Vietnam's information security workforce and the effectiveness of the ASEAN Student Information Security Contest. This annual competition, organized by VNISA since 2008, expanded to include students from other ASEAN countries in 2019.
Vietnamese teams that perform well in this competition are often nominated by VNISA to participate in regional and international CTF competitions, such as the Cyber SEA Game and ASEAN Cyber Shield, consistently bringing home top prizes.
For example, teams that excelled in the ASEAN 2023 Student Information Security Contest brought home two first-place and one second-place awards from the ASEAN Cyber Shield and a second-place finish at the Cyber SEA Game 2023.
VNISA announced that the ASEAN 2024 Student Information Security Contest will continue with preliminary and final rounds. The preliminary round is scheduled to be held online on October 5, with the final round taking place on October 19.
