Recently, the renowned culinary website Taste Atlas announced its list of the 100 best dessert pastries in the world, with a Vietnamese street food favorite making the cut.
According to Taste Atlas, despite its name, "banh cam" (orange cake) contains no hint of orange flavor. The name is derived purely from its round, orange-like appearance.
Banh cam is made from glutinous rice flour with a sweet mung bean filling. After being shaped into round balls, the dough is coated with sesame seeds before being deep-fried to a golden brown.

In northern Vietnam, visitors can find various other versions of fried pastries, such as "banh ran mat" (fried pastry with honey), "banh ran duong" (fried pastry with sugar), or savory fried pastries stuffed with minced pork, wood ear mushrooms, and shiitake mushrooms, offering a rich and flavorful experience.
Banh cam is a popular Vietnamese street snack, commonly sold at local markets and street food stalls, cherished for its crispy texture and sweet, fragrant filling.
Global dessert ranking
Leading the list of the world’s best dessert pastries is Pączki, a traditional Polish treat similar to American donuts. Pączki are made from flour, eggs, and milk, and are deep-fried to achieve a fluffy, airy texture.
Traditional Pączki are typically dusted with powdered sugar and filled with plum or rosehip jam. Nowadays, they are also made with a variety of fillings such as strawberry, apple, raspberry, and blueberry.
Founded in 2015 and based in Zagreb, Croatia, Taste Atlas is known for its comprehensive catalog of traditional dishes from around the globe. According to its founder, Matija Babić, the website's food and drink rankings are based on expert opinions and reviews from culinary critics to ensure accuracy and credibility.
