Top Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh has booked a place in the semifinals of the ongoing 2016 New Zealand Grand Prix Gold after coming from behind to beat Qiao Bin of China 2-1 in the quarterfinals on March 25.
It took world no.43 Tien Minh roughly 70 minutes to produce a successful comeback against world no.50 Qiao Bin, who had his confidence boosted by his third-round win over Indonesia’s badminton prodigy Christie Jonatan.
Despite suffering a 17-21 loss in the first set, the Vietnamese shuttler promptly equalised in the second set with a score of 21-17 before putting the match to rest with a 21-14 victory in the third set.
In the semifinals, Tien Minh will play unseeded Riichi Takeshita of Japan, who surprisingly overcame no.3 seed Lee Dong-keun of the Republic of Korea 2-1 (21-16, 17-21, 21-8) in anther quarterfinal clash the same day.
Another Vietnamese representative Vu Thi Trang had to bid farewell to the tournament in the second round of the women’s singles event.
