The announcement, made by the Permanent Office of the Ministry of Public Security on United Nations peacekeeping operations, highlights the significance of this appointment.

The position, which belongs to the leadership team of the UN Police Division, was traditionally reserved for long-term UN personnel. Lieutenant Colonel Hai’s selection demonstrates the UN’s recognition of his expertise and effective contributions.

Pioneering a key role at the UN Police Division

As Acting Special Assistant and Chief of Staff, Lieutenant Colonel Hai is responsible for overseeing all operations within the Office of the Police Adviser.

His duties include reviewing and managing documents from functional departments before submission to the Police Adviser, organizing work schedules for both the Police Adviser and Deputy Police Adviser, and serving as the official spokesperson for the Police Adviser.

In addition to his managerial responsibilities, he acts as the primary liaison between the UN Police Division and higher offices such as the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.

He also oversees the UN Police’s official communication channels, including its website and social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

From Vietnam to the United Nations

Lieutenant Colonel Hai’s journey began with 17 years of experience at the People’s Police Academy, where he honed the skills and knowledge crucial for his current role. In 2022, he became the first Vietnamese police officer selected to work at the UN Police Division in New York.

His expertise in combating organized and transnational crime helped him stand out among nearly 200 candidates from various countries in a competitive selection process.

After two years of commendable service, his term was extended in August 2024. In January 2025, his exceptional performance earned him the significant role of Acting Special Assistant and Chief of Staff to the Police Adviser.

Lieutenant Colonel Hai directly reports to Police Adviser Faisal Shahkar, who also serves as Director of the UN Police Division. His responsibilities encompass strategic policy development, mission management, and recruitment processes, demonstrating his integral role within the organization.

This appointment is not only a personal achievement for Lieutenant Colonel Hai but also a testament to the growing capacity of Vietnamese police officers to meet the high standards of international peacekeeping operations. His success reflects Vietnam’s commitment and ability to contribute effectively to global peace and security initiatives.
