This marks the first Whitmore patient to be recorded in Dak Lak this year.

The patient, 41 living in Buon Ma Thuot city, was initially admitted to hospital after suffering from symptoms such as fever and back pain.

On April 4, the patient's test results came back positive for Burkholderia Pseudomallei bacteria.

Immediately after detecting the case, the Dak Lak health sector provided guidance on preventive measures. It also requested local doctors to strengthen surveillance in the area and work to raise people’s awareness about proactively preventing Whitmore disease.

Whitmore (Melioidosis) is an infection which occurs in both humans and animals and is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei.

The most common symptom of Melioidosis comes from an infection in the lungs,  which is then accompanied by fever and muscle pain.
