Despite opening nationwide on March 7, The Corpse had already amassed an impressive VND 45 billion ($1.8 million) from early screenings, selling over 500,000 tickets and taking the number one spot at the weekend box office. As of the morning of March 10, the film has exceeded VND 61 billion ($2.44 million), according to Box Office Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Ancestral House, the supernatural horror hit directed by Huynh Lap and starring Phuong My Chi, saw a drop in revenue, earning VND 18 billion ($720,000) over the weekend with 190,000 tickets sold.

Despite the decline, the film has now surpassed VND 225 billion ($9 million) and sold nearly 3 million tickets, officially ranking among the top 8 highest-grossing Vietnamese films of all time.

Horror films lead box office rankings

Vietnamese audiences continue to embrace horror as a dominant genre. The gripping The Corpse follows a dark, intense storyline that has captivated moviegoers, while Ancestral House maintains strong momentum despite a new competitor.

Meanwhile, international films also made an impact at the Vietnamese box office:

The Oscar-winning animated film Lac Troi (Flow) secured VND 7.5 billion ($300,000) over the weekend, bringing its total in Vietnam to VND 10 billion ($400,000) - a remarkable feat for an independent animated movie from outside the U.S.

Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar continued to perform well, grossing VND 6 billion ($240,000) over the weekend, with its re-release now totaling VND 19 billion ($760,000) - an impressive achievement 11 years after its original release.

Kwon Sang Woo’s action-comedy kicks off with impressive early earnings.

The South Korean action-comedy The Hitman starring Kwon Sang Woo had a strong early reception, earning VND 5.8 billion ($232,000) from advance screenings over the weekend.

The film officially premieres on March 14 and is expected to perform well thanks to its mix of action and humor. The Vietnamese dubbed version features popular comedian Le Duong Bao Lam, adding to the film’s local appeal.

The success of The Corpse and Ancestral House underscores the growing popularity of horror films in Vietnam. The genre has consistently performed well at the box office, with audiences showing strong support for locally made supernatural thrillers.

With Ancestral House already in the top 8 highest-grossing Vietnamese films, the question remains: Can The Corpse break into the all-time top rankings as well?
