Three months after suffering a leg fracture during the 2024 ASEAN Cup, striker Nguyen Xuan Son has returned to the pitch for the first time, astonishing supporters with his remarkable recovery.
While Xuan Son has not yet resumed full training with his teammates, he now moves with relative ease on the field. The 28-year-old forward was even seen dancing to music and lifting weights confidently.
If his recovery continues on track, Xuan Son could return to competitive play by August or September. His comeback would be a significant boost for both Thep Xanh Nam Dinh and the Vietnamese national team.
Nguyen Xuan Son, born Rafaelson Bezerra Fernandes on March 30, 1997, in Pirapemas, Brazil, is a professional footballer who plays as a striker for Thep Xanh Nam Dinh in Vietnam's V.League 1 and the Vietnam national team.
He began his career in Brazil with clubs like Vitoria, had stints in Japan and Denmark, and moved to Vietnam in 2020. His strong performances in Vietnam led to his naturalization as a Vietnamese citizen in September 2024, at which point he adopted the name Nguyen Xuan Son.
Xuan Son made an immediate impact for Vietnam, debuting in December 2024 during the ASEAN Championship, where he scored two goals and made two assists in a 5–0 win over Myanmar. He became the first naturalized player to score for Vietnam in an official tournament.
In the same tournament, he finished as top scorer with 7 goals and was named Most Valuable Player. Notably, he scored twice in the final's first leg against Thailand. Unfortunately, he suffered a severe injury (broken fibula and tibia) in the second leg, requiring surgery and an estimated 8-month recovery.
