VietNamNet Bridge - Chu Dinh Toi, who won scholarships to study in Asian and Europe, plans to return to Vietnam to teach in Hanoi.

“After I accumulated knowledge and experience in a modern working environment in a foreign country, the desire to return to the homeland to contribute to the country’s development was always smoldering,” Toi, who works for Oslo University in Norway, said.

Chu Dinh Toi is a well known name among young scientists. Winning scholarships to study in Asian and Europe for a master’s degree and then doctorate, Toi was one of five people in the world who received a full scholarship for a medical doctorate at Bialystok Medical University and Polish Academy of Sciences in 2015 under an EU-funded program. 

He was also one of 25 outstanding young scientists in the world who was granted the EU’s prestigious Marie Curie post-doctoral fellowship in medicine.

Toi chose to study veterinary medicine at the Agriculture University and became a lecturer at the Hanoi University of Education. After obtaining a doctorate overseas, he continued to work in Norway.

Since 2011, he has been regularly returning to Vietnam to organize workshops and set up classes to find online scholarship candidates to help young people obtain opportunities to study abroad. With the support of the class, many young people study abroad and come back to Vietnam with a master's degree, doctorate or postdoctoral education.

The doctor from Hanoi has written books to share experiences on studying overseas, and skills to hunt for foreign scholarships. These include bestsellers such as ‘Toi da di du hoc bang hoc bong nhu the nao?’ (How did I study overseas with scholarship?), and ‘Cam nang hoc tap va lam viec o nuoc ngoai’ (Handbook of studying and working in foreign countries).

Toi has revealed that he is going to return to the biology faculty of the Hanoi University of Education to work as a lecturer, in an aim to become involved directly in the training of a high-quality workforce, help students find scholarships for overseas study, and equip them with research skills.

“I want to see more students study abroad with scholarships to approach new knowledge and technologies. This will help them become knowledgeable and confident to satisfy the requirements of the 4.0 industry revolution,” Toi said.

Toi went on to say that in the 4.0 era the training quality needs to be upgraded and students need better knowledge and skills, especially foreign language skills. 

“I know a lot of engineers who have good professional knowledge, but cannot apply for work at multinational corporations just because of their weak foreign language skills,” he said.
