Born in 2005 in Irvine, California, to Vietnamese parents, Tien began playing tennis at the age of five. His talent quickly garnered attention, and he rose through the ranks of junior tennis in the United States. He captured the junior men’s doubles title at the Australian Open in 2023 and was the runner-up at the ATP Finals Junior in 2024.
Tien’s journey at this year’s Australian Open has been nothing short of extraordinary.
In the first round, he endured a grueling five-set match against Camilo Ugo Carabelli, securing victory with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
The second round saw Tien deliver a shocking upset by defeating fifth-seed Daniil Medvedev in another nail-biting five-setter, finishing with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (8), 1-6, 7-6 (7).
Continuing his impressive form, Tien faced Corentin Moutet in the third round. Despite Moutet’s higher ranking - 45 spots above him - Tien triumphed with a straight-set victory in just under three hours.
With this win, Learner Tien advances to the fourth round, where he awaits the winner of the match between Lorenzo Sonego and Fabian Marozsán. This next challenge will take place on January 20.
