Vietnamese students earned six gold and two silver medals on December 16 at the ongoing 17th ASEAN University Games (AUG 17) in Palembang, Indonesia.
Vietnamese table tennis players carried off two golds in the women’s and men’s table tennis team events.
In the track and field, Quach Thi Lan, Vu Thi Huong and Nguyen Thi Phuong bagged four gold medals in the women’s 100-, 400-, 5,000-m categories, respectively, while Nguyen Van Lai took a gold for the men’s 10,000-m category.
On December 16, Vietnamese athletes are scheduled to compete in the two last events of Pencak Silat and swimming.
The AUG is held every two years by the ASEAN countries in rotation. This year’s event features 20 sports with 225 sets of medals.
The 50-strong Vietnamese delegation competes in six sports, namely track and field, swimming, table-tennis, Taekwondo, Karate and chess.
At the previous games in Laos, Vietnam ranked second with 56 gold, 35 silver and 28 bronze medals.
