The July 20-21 event attracted more than 600 athletes, including 130 coming from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and the Philippines.

Malaysia came in second with five golds, four silvers and seven bronzes and the Philippines finished third with three golds, five silvers and five bronzes.

Vietnam’s top position had been anticipated as its strong rivals Thailand and the Republic of Korea (RoK) did not take part in, and Indonesia only sent young athletes to the tournament.

Leading Southeast Asian athletes of the Philippines and Malaysia performed beyond their capacity as their target will be the upcoming 27th Southeast Asian games in Myanmar later this year.

Top Vietnamese sprinters Truong Thanh Hang and Vu Thi Huong also did not compete at the event.

Although Vietnamese athletes won the 400m, 800m and 1,500m races, their results were far below their previous achievements. No new national records were set at the tournament.
