VietNamNet Bridge – With 26 golds, Vietnam topped the Southeast Asia Youth Athletics Championships which concluded in HCM City on June 8.
On June 8, the second day of the competition, Vietnamese athletes took 13 more golds, retaining their leading position with a total of 26 golds, 26 silvers, and 25 bronzes.
Thailand came second with 17 golds, 18 silvers, and 11 bronzes, and Indonesia finished third with 9 golds, 3 silvers and 8 bronzes.
According to the Vietnam Athletics Federation, the competition saw Vietnamese athletes outplay their foreign opponents, and some even broke their previous own records.
Among them were Nguyen Thi Huyen who won four gold medals in the 100m & 400m race, 400m hurdle, and 4x100m relay for women under 21, and Nguyen Thi Oanh who bagged three golds in the women’s 100m hurdle, 400m race, and 4x400m relay for women teenagers.
The 8th ASEAN Youth Athletics Championships attracted athletes from 7 regional countries. It was a preparatory tournament in the lead up to the Asia Youth Athletics Championship and the Youth Olympic Games in 2014.
