At a press briefing in HCM City on May 20, Vietnam’s Chinese coach Chen Yun Fat said that his team learned valuable lessons from Australia and Japan following their Group A clashes of the ongoing 2014 AFC Women’s Football Championships, and they are now ready for the play-off match.
Chen said he believes the May 21 game will be interesting because Vietnam and Thailand are familiar archrivals. Vietnam lost to Thailand in the final match of the SEA Games in 2013.
Chen also praised Thailand for its outstanding skill and tactics in defeating Myanmar 2-1 in a Group B match on May 19.
However, he said Vietnamese women have a golden chance to qualify for the World Cup as they play in their home turf and get familiar with the 3-5-2 formation which has proved successful over the years.
Vietnam’s chance comes after the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) were banned from the global tournament due to their notorious doping cases in 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The play-off match between Vietnam and Thailand will take place at HCM City’s Thong Nhat Stadium at 5.15pm.
