On February 19, a strategic partnership agreement was signed in Ho Chi Minh City between four Vietnamese enterprises specializing in tourism and shipbuilding. Focus Travel Group (FTG), a leading Mekong river tourism operator, spearheads the project as its primary investor.

The launch of the Mekong Lover is expected to be a major milestone for Vietnam’s cruise industry, positioning the country as a player in the international river tourism market.

"For the first time, a luxury cruise ship is being entirely designed, built, and operated by Vietnamese companies. This project reflects Vietnam’s growing capability in cruise tourism and shipbuilding," said Dang Bao Hieu, Chairman of Focus Travel Group.

The Mekong Lover cruise is inspired by Indochine architecture, blending colonial-era elegance with Vietnamese cultural elements.

A special inspiration comes from the Huynh Thuy Le ancient house in Sa Dec, famously linked to French writer Marguerite Duras, creating an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and sophisticated.

Unique features and extended Vietnamese itineraries: 32 private cabins: Each featuring a private balcony for an intimate, scenic experience; Infinity pool on the Mekong: A standout feature where guests can relax while watching the sunset over the river.

Unlike most international cruises that focus heavily on Cambodia, the Mekong Lover will offer an extended stay in Vietnam, allowing travelers to delve deeper into the culture and landscapes of the Mekong Delta.

"Instead of merely passing through Vietnam as a transit point, our itinerary extends guests’ time in the country, letting them engage more with local life - from traditional craft villages and floating markets to authentic Mekong cuisine," said Dang Bao Hieu.

This shift from Cambodian-centric cruise programs to a Vietnam-focused experience aims to showcase the cultural richness of the Mekong Delta.

The Mekong Lover project is expected to elevate Vietnam’s river tourism sector, setting a new standard for locally operated luxury cruises and attracting both domestic and international travelers.
