Vietnam to compete in Int’l futsal event

The national futsal team started training on July 14 in preparation for an international tournament in Hangzhou, China, next week.

Eighteen players under Spanish coach Bruno Jose Garcia Formoso are training at the Thai Son Nam Sport Centre and the course is to last six days.

In China, they will compete against the teams from Myanmar, Iran and the host country.

The event will be held from July 22 to 24 at the Huanglong Stadium.

Disabled athletes to meet at annual sports festival

More than 800 disabled athletes from 29 cities and provinces across the country are gathering in southern Can Tho city for an annual national sports tournament to be staged at the municipal gymnasium from July 16–20.

The participants will compete in seven sports: athletics, swimming, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, chess and boccia. These are among the country’s key sports in the international arena.

The Ho Chi Minh City team prevailed on last year’s medal tally, bringing home 307 gold, 200 silver and 110 bronze medals, while Hanoi finished second with 173 gold, 74 silver and 41 bronze. Quang Tri ranked third with 19 gold, 27 silver and 19 bronze medals.

The five-day event, jointly held by the General Department of Sports and Physical Training and Vietnam Paralympic Association, is aimed at creating a healthful playground for those with disabilities, motivating them to play sports for better health.

It also offers a good opportunity for disabled athletes to show their will and energy to overcome physical handicaps and integrate into the community, and to perform to their abilities to vie for a slot in the national teams.

That wins second stage of An Giang Television Cycling Cup

National athlete Nguyen Thi That sprinted to first place at the second stage of the An Giang Television Cycling Cup yesterday.

The Hat Ngoc Troi member spent 2hr 54.11min completing the 102km distance from Cu Chi District (HCM City) to Ben Tre City (Ben Tre Province).

Nguyen Thuy Dung of Binh Duong Environment-Water Supply and Drainage and Dang Huong Thao from Vinamit HCM City came second and third, respectively.

Phan Thi Lieu, also from Gao Hat Ngoc Troi, held onto the lead after two stages, timing 4:33.26.

Lieu's team currently top the team rankings with a result of 13:40.48.

The 82km third stage will start at Ben Tre and finish in Vinh Long City in Vinh Long Province.

Giang advances to second round of ITF tennis juniors

Trinh Linh Giang of Viet Nam found a second-round berth at the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit in HCM City yesterday.

The wildcard holder beat Leo Vithoontien of Thailand 6-2, 6-2, becoming the only one of the hosts left in the men's singles category.

He will next play No 4 seed Jeffrey Hsu of Taipei, who won 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 over Thai Phongsapak Kerdlaphee, in today's second round match.

In the women's doubles pool, Si Boi Ngoc and Dao Minh Trang defeated Melati Aurora Devi and Putri Dwinta Augustarani Sagung from Indonesia 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.

Their next rivals are No 2 seed duo Kamonluk Kittitanom and May Wanvisa Thurakitseree.

The Thais had an easy match with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph against a mixed-nationality pair Dao Thu Uyen of Viet Nam and Allison Le of the US.

Second leg of Women's Football Championship to begin

The National Women's Football Championship's second leg will start on Friday in Nha Trang City and end on August 2.

Phong Phu Ha Nam, Ha Noi 1 and Viet Nam Coal and Minerals were the top three teams at the end of the first leg of the event.

Ha Noi 1 will play Ha Noi 2 in the opening match at the city stadium.

In the second match, HCM City will play Thai Nguyen. The last match of the day will be between Coal and Ha Nam.

Some matches which are expected to witness aggressive competition will be broadcast live on the VTV6 channel.
