On February 25, General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held high-level meetings with leaders from Malaysia, Timor-Leste, Laos, and Cambodia on the sidelines of the 2nd ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) in Hanoi.

The discussions aimed to strengthen diplomatic ties, boost economic cooperation, and enhance regional stability.

Vietnam and Malaysia: Advancing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

During his meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, General Secretary To Lam emphasized the historic significance of upgrading Vietnam-Malaysia relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in November 2024.

Both sides acknowledged the rapid growth in trade and investment, with bilateral trade approaching USD 18 billion. They agreed to expand cooperation in energy, fisheries, semiconductor technology, and digital transformation, while boosting cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia’s strong commitment to its partnership with Vietnam, emphasizing the mutual benefits of economic collaboration and expressing support for Vietnam’s regional initiatives.

Strengthening Vietnam-Timor-Leste Relations

General Secretary To Lam also met President of Timor-Leste José Ramos-Horta, who praised Vietnam’s economic success as a model for Timor-Leste’s development.

Bilateral trade grew by 21.4% in 2024, with Viettel’s subsidiary, Telemor, playing a key role in Timor-Leste’s telecom infrastructure. The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, fisheries, food processing, energy, aviation, education, and tourism.

President Ramos-Horta expressed his country’s strong desire to strengthen economic ties with Vietnam and accelerate its integration into ASEAN.

Vietnam-Laos: Deepening Strategic Cooperation

The Prime Minister is confident that with the participation and valuable contributions of the Lao delegation and other international delegations, the AFF will continue to serve as an incubator of ideas for ASEAN in its new phase of development.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met Lao Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to implementing joint economic and security agreements.

The two sides discussed accelerating major infrastructure projects, enhancing trade ties, and strengthening cross-border security cooperation. Vietnam’s investment in Laos continues to grow, with key projects in transport, energy, and telecommunications.

Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith praised Vietnam’s leadership in hosting the ASEAN Future Forum, which has gained international recognition as a platform for shaping ASEAN’s future policies.

Vietnam-Cambodia: Expanding Economic and Infrastructure Collaboration

During talks with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highlighted recent high-level political engagements between Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, emphasizing the importance of strengthening historical ties and economic integration.

Both sides committed to expanding trade, improving transport connectivity, and enhancing cooperation in energy, tourism, and human resource development. The meeting also reinforced Vietnam and Cambodia’s shared commitment to promoting peace and prosperity in the region.

These high-level meetings underscore Vietnam’s active role in shaping ASEAN’s economic and political landscape, as well as its efforts to strengthen bilateral relations with key partners. Vietnam continues to position itself as a regional leader in trade, technology, and sustainable development.

As Vietnam hosts the 2nd ASEAN Future Forum, its diplomatic engagements reaffirm the country’s commitment to fostering a prosperous, connected, and resilient Southeast Asia.
