Vietnam’s rescue delegation from the Ministry of Public Security has detected signs of life beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Myanmar and is racing against time to save trapped victims.
On the morning of April 1, Colonel Nguyen Minh Khuong, Deputy Director of the Fire and Rescue Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), reported that Vietnam’s rescue team had delivered emergency medicine and supplies to Mr. Sa Weli Frag, Director of the Disaster Management Department under Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. The aid is part of Vietnam’s support for Myanmar in overcoming the aftermath of the devastating earthquake.
The aid package includes antibiotics, digestive and flu medicine, as well as essential medical equipment such as blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, SpO2 sensors, stretchers, bandages, gauze, and disinfectant supplies.
Later that same morning, the Vietnamese rescue team began search-and-rescue operations at the site of a 1,000-bed hospital building in Zabuthiri township, where a five-story building had collapsed during the earthquake.
After collecting on-site information and using advanced radar detection systems, the team marked a rescue map and cordoned off the area. Initial findings indicated one victim was trapped under the rubble. The collapse on the first floor covered over 200 square meters and was structurally unstable, with risks of further collapse.
The identified victim is Kaung Khant Kyaus, a 14-year-old boy who was on the first floor at the time of the quake. As the team worked through debris, they discovered a second potential victim location.
Radar signals indicated possible signs of life, prompting the rescue team to act swiftly and cautiously to preserve the lives of those trapped.
Efforts are ongoing, with teams expected to take over an hour to cut through reinforced concrete and safely extract the victim. The rescue operation is being carried out under extreme urgency, yet with maximum care to avoid further harm.
Previously, on March 31, the team successfully recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy, which was handed over to local authorities.
