The move came after a report by the municipal police department showed that all the roads around the country's biggest port have recently faced serious traffic jams.

According to the report, there were four long traffic jams on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street which leads to Cat Lai Port between August 29 to September 9. Two of them lasted over five hours, leaving vehicles gridlocked for kilometres around the port.

"This street has been overloaded due to a rise in the number of vehicles," the report explained. "Cat Lai Port is dealing with over 70 percent of containers for international trade. Some 22,000 vehicles are transporting containers to the port every day, a big burden for Nguyen Thi Dinh Street. Moreover, since the Truong Tho Port reduced operations in August this year, more containers and vehicles have turned to Cat Lai."

Following the report from the police, the vice-chairman of the municipal people's committee, Bui Xuan Cuong, has asked the local transport department to co-operate with authorities in Thu Duc City and concerned agencies to quickly solve the problems.

At a recent meeting, the HCM City Transport Department said that they were going to carry out several construction projects to curb the traffic jams in Cai Lai Port including building a road connecting Cat Lai and Phu Huu ports and upgrading Nguyen Duy Trinh, and Nguyen Thi Dinh streets, while expanding Dong Van Cong Street.
