Located in Phuoc Khanh Commune, Nhon Trach District, Dong Nai Province, the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 Power Plants are among Vietnam’s most significant energy projects.
They are the first in the country to utilize LNG, a cleaner, more efficient fuel source that aligns with global energy trends.
On February 4, engineers and workers at the Nhon Trach 3 plant were seen making final technical inspections to ensure smooth operation.
According to Phan Minh Tam, Deputy Head of Project Safety, several key components, including the 220kV power distribution system, water treatment systems, and waste processing facilities, have already undergone successful testing.
Inside the central control room, often referred to as the "heart" of the project, both Vietnamese and foreign experts are conducting rigorous assessments before full-scale operation.
Satrio GE, an international engineer, emphasized the significance of this milestone: "Connecting to the national grid is a critical step that allows us to proceed with the Nhon Trach 4 plant."
Contributing to national energy security
Owned by PV Power (PetroVietnam Power Corporation), the two power plants boast a combined capacity of 1,624 MW. Once fully operational, they are expected to generate around 9 billion kWh annually, significantly enhancing energy security in southern Vietnam.
The project’s first major success came on February 5 at 11:11 AM, when the Nhon Trach 3 plant was successfully synchronized with the national grid at 50 MW capacity.
According to project leaders, the plant is on track to begin commercial power generation in July 2025, with Nhon Trach 4 following in October 2025.
Le Ba Quy, Director of the Project Management Board, highlighted the strategic importance of Nhon Trach 3 and 4, noting that they are the only LNG power plants currently under construction out of 13 LNG projects planned in the national power roadmap.
Recognized as a key national infrastructure project, Nhon Trach 3 and 4 have received strong backing from the government, with close oversight from ministries and regulatory bodies.
The completion of these plants will pave the way for future LNG power projects under Vietnam’s Power Development Plan VIII, approved by the Prime Minister.
Beyond enhancing energy stability, the project is also a step forward in Vietnam’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050, aligning with global climate pledges made at COP26.
With LNG power playing a growing role in Vietnam’s energy mix, Nhon Trach 3 and 4 mark a major milestone, demonstrating the country’s ambition to adopt cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions for the future.
