Veteran cyclist Hoang Hai Nam has won Vietnam’s first gold medal at the 2025 Asian Road Cycling Championships in Thailand, despite competing with a borrowed bicycle from the host country.
The Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation announced the remarkable achievement, stating: "This is the first time Hoang Hai Nam has represented Vietnam in an Asian-level event. Despite facing unforeseen challenges, he secured the gold medal in the over-60 men's individual time trial."
The Vietnamese road cycling team arrived in Thailand on February 5 to participate in the Asian Championships, which run from February 7 to 16.
Upon arrival in Bangkok, the Vietnamese delegation boarded a bus to the competition venue, while their bicycles, helmets, shoes, and other gear were transported separately by truck.
However, a tragic incident occurred when the transport caught fire, destroying all 29 bicycles and essential equipment.
Competing with borrowed gear
The Thai organizers stepped in to assist, providing 18 new helmets, 18 pairs of racing shoes, and 18 sets of pedals. Additionally, they arranged for 27 replacement bicycles so the Vietnamese team could continue competing.
Despite the setback, Hoang Hai Nam delivered an outstanding performance in the men’s over-60 individual time trial, securing Vietnam’s first gold medal at the championship.
The Vietnam Cycling Federation has announced plans to send new bicycles to Thailand by February 10, ensuring the rest of the team has proper equipment to compete at their best in the remaining events.
