On the afternoon of July 18, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pham Thu Hang, provided more details about the group of Vietnamese who died in Bangkok on July 16.
The spokesperson stated that Thai authorities confirmed four out of the six deceased individuals at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in Bangkok were Vietnamese citizens.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chinh issued a directive for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to closely coordinate with Thai authorities to investigate and clarify the matter, and to implement measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens.
The Prime Minister has requested the Ministry of Public Security to collaborate in the investigation as requested by Thailand, to quickly verify the identities of the victims. The Prime Minister has also asked the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand to closely monitor the situation, promptly report the progress of the investigation, and carry out citizen protection measures, including visiting, guiding, and supporting the victims' families with necessary posthumous procedures according to regulations.
Following the Prime Minister's directive, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has provided information about the incident to the relevant authorities of the Ministry of Public Security.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand has been working closely with local authorities to update the situation, assist in the investigation, and request the Royal Thai Police and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide information on the case's progress and facilitate the Embassy's implementation of citizen protection measures.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand is also in contact with Thai authorities to promptly guide the victims' families on posthumous procedures when permitted.
The spokesperson said: "Once again, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and hope they can overcome this immense loss."
Thai police reported on July 16 about six bodies, including four Vietnamese and two Vietnamese Americans, in room 502 of the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in Bangkok.
Forensic authorities determined that cyanide was present in a teapot and six tea cups in the room, based on the examination of the scene and the blood of the deceased group.
Thai police identified the suspect as Sherine Chong, a Vietnamese American. The suspect's body was also found at the scene.
The victims have been identified as Dang Hung Van (55 years old), Tran Dinh Phu (37 years old), Nguyen Thi Phuong (46 years old), Nguyen Thi Phuong Lan (47 years old), and Pham Hong Thanh (49 years old).
