Cultural cooperation – bright spot in Vietnam-France friendship
Over the past 50 years, since Vietnam and France established their diplomatic relations, cultural cooperation has contributed to creating favourable conditions to promote their cooperation in various fields, strengthening the friendship and mutual understanding between the two peoples, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung said on November 17 when meeting French Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak in Paris.
The official highlighted that Vietnam is considered an active member with important contributions to the activities of the Francophone community.
At the meeting, he spoke highly of the effective operation of two cultural centres – the French Institute in Vietnam and the Vietnamese Cultural Centre in France - as they actively serve as a cultural bridge connecting the two peoples through diverse activities.
For her part, French Minister Rima Abdul Malak said that France and Vietnam have a traditional historical relationship, in which cultural cooperation is a bright spot, connecting the two peoples.
She emphasised that France pays attention to and focuses on developing cultural and creative industries that bring high-quality values to the youth generations.
The official proposed programmes to translate French literary books into Vietnamese and Vietnamese literary books into French.
She also suggested promoting cinema cooperation - an area that France gives much attention to.
The two ministers agreed to assign relevant agencies to develop a planning framework facilitating the signing of cooperation documents on the occasion of the official visit by French leaders to Vietnam in 2024.
On this occasion, she invited the Vietnamese Minister to the 19th Francophonie Summit in October 2024 to be hosted by France.
Vietnam-Cuba relations to thrive further for mutual development
The Vietnam-Cuba relations will thrive further, contributing to the protection and construction of the two nations, said First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and President of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel in his recent reception for outgoing Vietnamese Ambassador Le Thanh Tung in Havana.
The Cuban leader lauded the sides’ loyal, practical, and effective friendship so far and highlighted the role of high-level delegation exchanges and phone and virtual talks between their leaders and officials in strengthening such ties.
He thanked Vietnam’s spiritual and material assistance for Cuba in food production and sympathy and solidarity with Cuba given the current difficult period facing the Cuban revolution.
The leader extended his invitation for Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Vo Van Thuong, and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam to soon visit Cuba, while his guest conveyed the Vietnamese leaders’ invitation for him to visit Vietnam.
For his part, the ambassador reaffirmed the solidarity and support of the Vietnamese Party, State, Government and people for Cuba. Vietnam consistently calls on the US to end the unilateral embargo against Cuba and to remove Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
He congratulated Cuba on its recent victories on the foreign front, with the United Nations General Assembly in early November passing a resolution on the necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the US against Cuba, and the country being elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2024-2026 term in October 2023.
Tung affirmed that he will continue to contribute to fortifying and developing the special relationship between Vietnam and Cuba./.
Art show celebrates 50th anniversary of Vietnam-France ties
An art show “Vietnamese Cultural Night” was held in Paris on November 18 as one of the activities to wrap up the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam-France diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of their strategic partnership.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung said that the similarities in culture and people-to-people exchanges help connect the two peoples and diversify cooperative activities between the two countries.
The Vietnamese Culture Tourism Week in France with cultural activities from tourism promotion talks, an exhibition of silk paintings and handicraft products, to artistic performances partly reflect the Vietnamese spirit of optimism, excitement, respect for the past, towards a prosperous and future.
He affirmed that the week is a spiritual gift to close the year marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and move forward with deeper developments in the strategic partnership between the two sides in fields.
He said he hopes that the two countries will work together for a successful and memorable Paris 2024 Olympics.
For his part, French Senator Jeremy Bacchi said that it’s good to see Vietnam and France maintain close cooperation in fields over the past years.
He said in 2023, the two countries have witnessed activities celebrating their bilateral relations, adding he believes that thanks to the activities, France and French people understand better about the Vietnamese culture, history and efforts to achieve goals.
Da Lat aims to attract 190,000 tourists during 23rd Vietnam Film Festival
Da Lat city in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong expects to welcome some 190,000 visitors, including 8,000 foreigners, during the upcoming Vietnam Film Festival in the locality.
A national event held biennially by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Film Festival was organised in various localities with tourism potential such as Vung Tau, Hanoi, Nha Trang, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City. This year, the festival is taking place in the resort city of Da Lat from November 21 to 25.
Ta Quang Dong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, compared Da Lat to a grand filming location, captivating with beautiful and poetic landscapes. In recent times, many popular films have been filmed here.
An award for feature films shot in Da Lat called “Lam dong – Cao nguyen hung vi (Lam Dong - Majestic Highlands) will be presented at this festival, according to Pham S, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, who is also co-head of the Steering Committee for the festival.
The event, which aims to honour outstanding cinematographic works, film makers, and artists in the industry, will feature an array of activities such as the exhibition “Da Lat – a source of inspiration for cinema” on November 21 and a series of cinematic conferences on November 22-23.
As many as 147 films will be screened for free on the occasion, including many blockbusters like Nha Ba Nu (The House of No Man), Em va Trinh (You and Trinh), Nguoi Vo Cuoi Cung (The Last Wife), and Tro Tan Ruc Ro (Glorious Ash).
Ninety-one best films have been chosen to vie for the Lotus Awards held within the film festival, comprising 16 feature films, 31 documentaries, 19 science films, 25 cartoons.
The festival will offer a good chance for the Central Highlands locality, which has joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, to promote its image to domestic and international visitors./.
Vietnam commits cooperation with IOM: Ambassador
Vietnam has supported and committed to boosting cooperation with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to carry out the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), a high-ranking official has said.
At a recent working session with IOM General Director Amy Pope, Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to eth United Nations (UN), World Trade Organisation (WTO) and other international organisations in Geneva, highlighted that the Vietnamese ministries, sectors and branches have prioritised and worked together to ensure multi-sectoral approach in handling migration challenges.
She pointed to several cooperation fields such as protecting rights for migrant workers, ensuring health and medical access for migrants, and improving locals’ ability to adapt and respond to climate change.
Vietnam has proactively engaged in international cooperation mechanisms on migration within the framework of ASEAN, ASEM and APEC, she added.
Welcoming Vietnam’s efforts and achievements in migration and the realisation of the GCM, Pope said enhancing migrants’ response and resilience to climate change and natural disasters will be a top priority of IOM’s activities in the coming time.
Vietnam and the IOM also hold great potential to boost cooperation at international mechanisms, especially those on migrant workers, the settlement of migration challenges in tandem with the realisation of development goals, and improvement of climate change response capacity, she said.
Pope assumed the post of the IMO General Director in October 1, 2023, becoming the first woman to lead the UN migration agency. Her priorities include promoting the participation of member states and the private sectors in response to migration challenges, encouraging rational policies for member states, capitalising on the IOM’s database, and continuing to reform the IOM’s budget programmes./.
“Love Hanoi” Club in France makes debut
A club named “Love Hanoi" made its debut in Paris on November 18 to spread the love for the homeland in the Vietnamese community in France.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, chairwoman of the club Nguyen Thu Trang said the club aims to strengthen solidarity and connect Vietnamese people in France in particular and Europe in general as well as supporting Vietnamese children and boost tourism development in the home country.
Trang said to help Vietnamese students to have a better studying environment, the club has called on overseas Vietnamese communities in France as well as in Europe to support and build a scholarship fund to help children in difficult circumstances with good academic achievements in Vietnam.
Besides, the club aims to become a bridge to promote tourism through support and connection activities to help Vietnamese tourists access necessary tourism services when visiting France and Europe and vice versa.
Earlier, a club named “Love Vietnam’s seas and islands” was launched on March 19 in Paris, following the movement “All for Vietnam’s seas and islands” that is spreading across Europe.
Tran Thu Dung, a founder of the club, said the club aims to connect the community and French friends who love Vietnam in general and the country’s seas and islands in particular.
The club is also expected to promote Vietnamese people, nature, marine culture, and specialties to attract visitors to Vietnam.
Dung said that the club will also engage in fundraising to support students, teachers, schools, community houses, and libraries on Truong Sa islands, contributing to socio-economic development and protecting Vietnam's sovereignty over the seas and islands.
On this occasion, an exhibition on Vietnam’s seas and islands and several traditional art music performances were also introduced at the event./.
Vietnam, Canada boast huge cooperation potential: Canadian official
The future of the relationship between Canada and Vietnam is promising, especially in the field of trade thanks to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), said Ghislain Robichaud, Regional Director for Quebec and Nunavut under the Global Affairs Canada.
Vietnam is at the heart of the priorities in the Indo-Pacific Strategy that Canada is implementing, the official stressed at a ceremony held in Montreal city of Quebec by the Canada-ASEAN Business Council (CABC) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the bilateral diplomatic relations.
He said that the Indo-Pacific is currently the second largest international export market for the province of Quebec and also one of Canada's markets with the strongest growth rate in recent years, adding since 2018 when the CPTPP took effect, the Quebec government has supported more than 250 businesses in this province to expand operations to Vietnam, the official said.
In 2023, the CABC has organised many activities to promote Canadia’s trade and investment in ASEAN, with a special focus on Vietnam on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Most recently, it coordinated with the Canadian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City to hold a Clean Energy Partnership forum as part of a programme to support the Vietnamese Government and businesses in energy transition and climate change response to ensure energy security, he noted.
For his part, Vietnamese Ambassador to Canada Pham Vinh Quang said that Vietnam always considers Canada as a true friend and partner.
After half a century, the two sides have witnessed positive changes in their relations, with the establishment of a comprehensive partnership in 2017. Vietnam-Canada relations have contributed to realising Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy and its strategic partnership with the ASEAN region, noted the diplomat.
Canada is one of the most important partners of Vietnam and the country’s second biggest trade partner in America, he said, adding that Vietnam is Canada’s largest trade partner among the ASEAN member countries and a gateway for Canadian firms to enter this region.
Speaking to the Vietnam News Agency, CABC Executive Director TB Nguyen said that the administration of Quebec is giving priorities to Vietnam and considers the country as a new intersection in the global value chain due as Vietnam possesses huge potential in many fields that Quebec is interested in.
Director General of the Indo-Pacific Region Gabriel Chartier of the Quebec Ministry of International Relations and Francophonie said that Quebec and Vietnam share many similarities on the foundation of the Francophonie culture. The two sides have share close cooperation, especially since they signed a cooperation agreement in 1992, which has resulted in 125 joint projects.
The Canadian official noted that two-way trade exceeded 2 billion CAD (1.5 billion USD), with Vietnam mainly importing electronic equipment, agricultural and medical products from Quebec, and exporting electronics, footwear and garment to the Canadian locality. The two sides are also cherishing many new cooperation projects, contributing to diversifying the cooperative relationship, including those in culture, sustainable development and technology research.
Canada is joining other G7 countries in realising the commitment to supporting Vietnam in mobilising 15.5 billion USD to achieve the goal of zero emissions by 2050. Sharing similar goals, the CABC will coordinate with other parties to implement the commitment, he stated.
The CABC was established in 2012 by Canadian companies operating in ASEAN. The organisation, headquartered in Singapore and runs an office in Montreal, is responsible for promoting and strengthening trade relations between Canada and ASEAN.
Vietnamese Teachers’ Day marked in Russia, Germany
A ceremony was held at the Hanoi-Moscow trade centre (Incentra) on November 19 to celebrate the 41st Vietnamese Teachers’ Day (November 20).
Speaking at the event, Nguyen Khanh Duy, vice secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in Russia, said that the event aimed to honour teachers who have a very important role and position in society.
He expressed his hope that more Vietnamese-language classes will be opened to maintain the language's vitality in the community and help Vietnamese children living in Russia become ambassadors contributing to boosting the Vietnam-Russia relations.
On the same day, the AWO Vietnamese-language school in Berline held a ceremony to mark its 15th founding anniversary and the 41st Vietnamese Teachers’ Day.
Phan Quang Van, First Secretary in charge of education at the Vietnamese Embassy in Germany, said that in the context of economic integration, learning Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture become more important than ever because it enables Vietnamese people to introduce their culture to international friends.
Oliver Nöll, Deputy Mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg District, appreciated contributions made by the Vietnamese community to the district.
The school was established in 2008 by teacher Nguyen Thu Loan who is teaching Vietnamese language to people every Sunday./.
Bắc Giang historical festival recognised as national heritage
Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has added Xương Giang Festival in the northern province of Bắc Giang to the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritages.
The festival is a traditional historical and cultural event held annually in Bắc Giang City in the early spring, on January 6 and 7 of the lunar calendar, to commemorate the historical victory of Chi Lăng - Xương Giang in 1427.
A series of ceremonial spiritual practices and cultural festivities will be held during the festival. Processions and worshipping of saints are the main ceremonial spiritual celebrations, while the festivities comprise diverse cultural performances including singing, dancing and folk games.
The festival is among the 36 heritages that the ministry has announced recently to be recognised as national intangible cultural heritages.
The Chi Lăng - Xương Giang victory was renowned as a decisive moment of the Lam Sơn Uprising (1418-1427) led by the two national heroes of Lê Lợi and Nguyễn Trãi against the foreign invaders of Ming.
After 10 years of arduous and fierce fighting, the victory helped end 20 years of brutal domination by the Ming Dynasty, decisively opening national independence in the 15th century. Lê Lợi became king and named the country Đại Việt in 1428.
In 2019, the Xương Giang battle site in Bắc Giang City where the victory took place, was classified as a a special national monument in a decision by then Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc.
In 2020, the People's Committee of Bắc Giang Province decided to recognise the victory site as a tourist destination.
The Xương Giang Festival is a large scale event attracting the attention of local authorities and people not only around Xương Giang Citadel such as those from villages of Thành, Vẽ and Hàa Yên, but also throughout other wards in Bắc Giang City such as Dĩnh Kế, Lê Lợi, Hoàng Văn Thụ, Trần Nguyên Hãn, Đa Mai and Mỹ Độ.
However, the centre for main opening ceremonial activities is currently located at the special national relic site of Xương Giang Victory, in Xương Giang ward.
The festival is held to pay tribute and respect to national heroes, martyrs and people who fought and sacrificed for the homeland, and at the same aims enhance the strength of the great national unity.
It provides an opportunity to attract visitors to Bắc Giang Province, the land of a culture rich in dignity, a history of heroic revolutions, and friendly and hospitable people.
After more than two years of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Xương Giang Festival opened early this year with many special activities.
After a palanquin procession as part of the spiritual ceremony including an incense offering, the cultural festivities started with gongs and drums performances. In particular, an epic art programme recreating the Xương Giang Victory with the theme "Xương Giang's Pride Forever" included four parts featuring the fierce battle and glorious victory of Xương Giang.
Through images, music and performances by artists from the Bắc Giang Province's Chèo Theatre, the event offered local people and tourists a lively scene about a heroic land of outstanding people with typical cultural features of the ancient Lạng Thương Residency and Kinh Bắc Town in the past as well as Bắc Giang today. —
Trà Vinh to host 2023 Southern Festival Week
The 2023 Southern Culture, Tourism and Food Festival Week will be organised in Trà Vinh Province from November 21 to 27.
It will feature dozens of economic, cultural and sports activities to promote the culture, tourism, and economy of in the Mekong Rivel Delta provinces.
It will include a series of trade fairs displaying specialty products of Trà Vinh and neighbouring provinces, such as Sóc Trăng, Vĩnh Long, Bạc Liêu and Cà Mau, and seminars on investment and tourism promotion.
Food courts displaying traditional dishes, including sweet soups and cakes, and fruits from local farms, will be also featured.
The event will include traditional music, song and dance shows by hundreds of performers from leading art troupes of Trà Vinh and other provinces in the region.
Boat races, folk games, cooking, and sports competitions will also be featured.
“We hope our event, the 2023 Southern Culture, Tourism and Food Festival Week, will help boost our economic and tourism development, as well as introduce the traditional culture and lifestyle to visitors,” said Dương Hoàng Sum, director of the province’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Department, who is also a member of the organising board.
The week’s highlight will be the Ok Om Bok Festival, also called the Festival of Worshipping the Moon, a very important cultural event celebrated by the Khmer ethnics.
The Ok Om Bok Festival is recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
The event takes place under the full moon in the 10th lunar month, which is when it changes from the rainy season to the dry season and rice harvesting occurs.
It is also a religious ritual of the Khmer to commemorate the Snake God Nagar, who once turned into a trunk of wood to help Buddha cross the river, according to legend.
The Khmer believe the moon is a god who controls the weather and crops throughout the year.
On this occasion, they offer farm produce to thank the gods for favourable weather and a bountiful harvest.
Trà Vinh, located 130km south of HCM City, has a coastline of 65km and is located downstream of the Mekong River.
The province has diversified natural tourism resources and cultures. It has many riverine islands and fruit orchards offering year-round harvests.
Trà Vinh is home to about 330,000 Khmer people, accounting for 31 per cent of its population, and 143 Khmer pagodas.
Bắc Giang's district popularises dance clubs
Dance clubs in Lục Ngạn District in the northern province of Bắc Giang have grown, involving more than 600 elderly people.
Every day at 8pm, at the sports ground of the People's Committee of Giáp Sơn Commune, senior women eagerly practise dancing. When the music begins, everyone gets ready and starts the first dance.
For about an hour, their dancing has a strong rhythm and a wide range of movements alternating between dances, aerobics and combination exercises such as chachacha, tango, valse and zumba. The music is Vietnamese popular songs praising the beauty of Việt Nam country and people.
"Established in 2022, this is the first dance club in the district with 40 members," said Hoàng Thị Đông, head of the club. "Joining the club, the members have the chance to exchange and know more about dance. It is a place for them to practise to have good health and more joy in their life.
"We shoot clips and take photos to share on the internet, spreading love for dance and gathering more members."
Nguyễn Thị Hồng, from Trần Phú Street in Chũ Town, recently found herself a new hobby -- dancing.
"I was never much of a dancer," Hồng said. "The club members encouraged me to join the club. Dancing raises the level of dopamine and we can't help but be all smiles."
Most of the members in the 13 clubs in the district are taught to dance skillfully in 14 dances and 32 basic dancing steps of zumba, chachacha and bachata. The clubs have gradually become a more standardised and professional way of exercising for the elderly people in the district.
However, it is not easy to attract the people's attention because almost of them don't understand the benefits of dance, according to Đặng Thị Vượng, head of the club in Chũ Town.
"Many of them thought that dance is not suitable for elderly people," said Vượng. "But we search for dances specifically for the elderly and learn with professional dancers.
"The concept of active and healthy ageing should become more broadly embraced. There are more elderly people who should come to the club."
The district's Elderly People Association will set up clubs in all communes in the area, aiming at helping the club members to play an active role in society.
Teachers anticipate law safeguarding rights and supportive environments
Educators and teachers have eagerly been anticipating the enactment of the Law on Teachers, a pivotal legal framework designed to safeguard the rights and legitimate interests of teachers.
This law aims to create a secure and supportive environment, allowing educators to engage in their teaching profession with confidence and dedication.
As planned, the Ministry of Education and Training will submit the Law on Teachers to the National Assembly for feedback in the first session of June 2024. It will be discussed for approval during the second session in October 2024.
In recent times, the Party and the State have issued numerous documents and policies to care for educators and teachers. However, the existing legal provisions lack consistency, making them challenging to apply in practice. Therefore, the Government issued Resolution 95/NQ-CP to develop the Law on Teachers.
One of the challenging issues of the education sector is the severe shortage of teachers in various localities. This presents a significant challenge for the education sector in implementing Resolution 29-NQ/TW on fundamental and comprehensive innovation in education and training.
Policies regarding recruitment, treatment, utilisation, and management of teachers need to be improved to enhance the quality of education and training.
Trương Thị Thu Thuỷ, teacher at Lê Quý Đôn High School in northern Hải Phòng City, has been aware of issues such as streamlined administrative positions of teachers, as well as the allowances, recruitment, planning, and development of teachers.
Therefore, she is delighted to receive information about the Law on Teachers.
“Similar to the aspirations of many colleagues, I hope that salary policies will be improved to ensure a decent life for officials and teachers. When material needs are assured, teachers can invest more confidently in their professional development,” she said.
Lý Thị Thu, teacher from the Boarding Ethnic Primary School of Sủng Máng in Mèo Vạc District in northern Hà Giang Province, said with the current salary levels, teachers have struggled to make ends meet.
The current salary is not attractive enough to retain and engage young teachers in the profession, she said, adding that timely-adjusted policies in teachers’ income are needed.
Nguyễn Văn Đằng, principal of Lê Quý Đôn High School in Trực Ninh District in northern Nam Định Province, said it is essential to have comprehensive legislation to address the current common difficulties and challenges in the education sector, such as inadequate treatment in terms of salary and rewards.
According to Principal Đằng, currently, Lê Quý Đôn High School is implementing reforms in the general education curriculum and textbooks. Issues related to recruitment of teachers and their allowances must be guided by laws.
Therefore, the enactment of the Law on Teachers will serve as the highest legal basis for schools to implement necessary measures, he added.
One of the crucial policies in the Law on Teachers involves provisions on the identification, standards, criteria, rights, and obligations of educators. This policy outlines fundamental issues related to professional standards, teaching titles as the basis for managing and utilising teachers, ensuring equality between teachers in public and non-public educational institutions. It also defines the rights and obligations of teachers, enhances autonomy in teaching, the right to apply disciplinary measures in education, and intellectual property rights for creative and innovative educational content, as well as reinforces the duty of teachers in protecting and supporting students.
Phạm Thị Thanh Tâm, head of the Department of Education and Training in Đông Triều Town in northern Quảng Ninh Province, stated that regulations on the rights, obligations, and responsibilities of educators are currently stipulated in the Education Law, but detailed through sub-laws and regulations. Therefore, it is necessary to legislate the provisions regarding professional standards such as qualifications, clear records, and professional ethics, as well as regulations on the duties and powers of teachers.
From the perspective of non-public educational institutions, Bùi Thanh Anh, principal of MerryStar Preschool in Hà Nội, shared that the existing documents are more suitable for public educators, and there is no specific guidance to ensure the rights of educators in non-public institutions.
Anh hoped that under the Law on Teachers, the provisions on rights and obligations will be clearer, ensuring common benefits for educators regardless of whether they work in public or private institutions.
Teachers should receive fair and deserving benefits, and have equal opportunities for career development, she said.
Bùi Thị An, former deputy of the 13th National Assembly, gave two suggestions to the building of the Law on Teachers.
Firstly, the salary of teachers should be prioritised to be the highest in the administrative career system, with additional allowances based on the nature of the work and regional factors to ensure that they have economically sufficient conditions to support themselves and their families.
Secondly, the policy on working environment needs to ensure that teachers work in a professional environment that meets essential requirements for facilities and innovations in teaching, learning, and assessment. This includes occupational safety, dynamism, innovation, and autonomy for both teachers and students.
Vũ Minh Đức, head of the Teacher and Education Management Officials Department under the Ministry of Education and Training, stated that during the drafting of the law, the identification and regulation of criteria, standards, and titles for educators are particularly concerned. The law will also include specific and detailed requirements, especially regarding role modeling and creativity in educational activities. Additionally, the law will establish sanctions to protect the teaching staff.

Hence, the law is expected to stipulate sanctions to ensure safety for teachers in their professional activities and protect their dignity and reputation on social media, allowing them to work with peace of mind.
Thảo wins at Hồ Tràm Rumble, Zhu defends WBO Global belt
Vietnamese Trần Văn Thảo beat Kenbun Torres in a thrilling match of the WBO Global Title Match — Hồ Tràm Rumble event on November 18 at the Grand Hồ Tràm resort in Bà Rịa Vũng Tàu Province.
International Boxing Association champion Thảo faced tough challenges from his Mexican rival, who had an impressive record of nine knockouts in his 12 wins in 16 matches, from the first minutes of the men's featherweight 54kg class.
Torres's strong straight jabs pushed Thảo to defence before he fought back with his powerful right hooks and body shots.
Thảo continued to score in the next rounds. He was good in not only attacks but also defence, giving Torres no chance for closer access to deliver his punches.
In the fifth round, Torres opened consecutive attacks trying to assert his domination, but his loose defence left him suffering a series of cross-counters.
The remaining three rounds saw sparring in which Torres showed off his physical strength while Thảo was master of uppercuts.
After eight rounds, Thảo was announced the winner of the match, his 16th win after 17 times in the ring.
The Vietnamese boxer officially secured a place in the WBO Global feather belt match, scheduled for January 13, 2024 in South Korea.
In the main card of the Hồ Tràm Rumble event, Chinese Zhu Dianxing successfully defended his title of the WBO Global minimum weight (47.5kg) after he floored Thai Sanchai Yotboon in the third round.
Zhu showed his superior class approaching and creating tremendous pressure with many heavy hooks on his opponent.
Yotboon could not withstand such strong punches, collapsing twice in the second round. A powerful hook in the second minute of the third round ended Yotboon's effort in this challenge.
It was Zhu's 11th win and 10th KO in 12 matches.
Three other matches of the night also had KO results.
Botswana's 'The Eagle' Maobi Ngaka floored Vietnamese Thái Hoàng Huy near the end of the fourth round of the feather class.
Russian Mikhail Lesnikov technically knocked out Indian Lokesh Dangi in the super lightweight (68kg) class after a combo of heavy punches in the middle of the eighth round.
Genesis Servania of the Philippines quickly took his Indonesian opponent Waldo Sabu down in the second round of the light weight (61kg) class. His right hook left Sabu unconscious on the floor.
South Korean Seo Joo-hwan tied Chinese Liu Mingwei as they had equal scores from the judges after a four-round match.
Lệ and Quyết win Hạ Long Bay Heritage Marathon
Phạm Thị Hồng Lệ and Đặng Anh Quyết were the winners of the Hạ Long Bay Heritage Marathon 2023, held in Hạ Long City, Quảng Ninh Province on Sunday.
Lệ, a member of the national athletics team from Bình Định, secured first place in the women’s 42km category with an impressive time of 2:54.23.
"I am incredibly happy to have emerged victorious in this event, especially after overcoming my injury. This win serves as a great motivation for my future marathons," Lệ told Việt Nam News.
Lệ also expressed her enthusiasm about participating in the event for the first time, remarking on the beautiful weather and the excellent organisation that prioritised the safety of all participants.
Lệ's teammate from the national team, Lèo Thị Tình, secured second place in the women's marathon with a time of 2:59.12, while Lê Minh Tuân finished third, clocking in at 3:03.01.
During the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines in 2019, Lệ won a bronze medal in the women's marathon category, completing the race in 3:02.52. Following that achievement, she shifted her focus to the 5,000m and 10,000m distances in the subsequent SEA Games.
In the men's marathon event, amateur runner Đặng Anh Quyết delivered an outstanding performance, setting a personal record with a time of 2:37.39 to claim the title. Phạm Đức Thọ followed closely behind, securing second place with a time of 2:42.54, while Hoàng Hữu Hanh finished third with a time of 2:44.27.
Nguyễn Trung Cường, a member of the national team who had previously won the gold medal in the 3,000m steeplechase at SEA Games 32, won the men's 21km category. He completed the race with a time of 1:11.58, with Tống Văn Hoàn and Bá Văn Hân finishing in second and third place, respectively.
On the women's side, Phạm Thị Huệ claimed the title in the women's 21km category, completing the race in 1:19.42. Trần Thị Duyên secured second place with a time of 1:25.59, while Hoàng Hương Thùy finished third, clocking in at 1:32.29.
The Hạ Long Bay Heritage Marathon this year attracted a total of 9,100 runners, including nearly 1,000 participants from 42 countries and territories. The event was held as part of the commemorative activities celebrating the 60th anniversary of the province and the 20th anniversary of Hạ Long City.
Sacha Dray from France, who participated in the marathon, said: "I decided to compete in this event because it is one of the oldest marathons in Việt Nam. The organisation was excellent, and the race offered breathtaking views of Hạ Long Bay. It's been a pleasure to explore the bay while running."
Evelyn Lengua from Australia, who completed the 42km category, described the course as amasing and praised the beauty of the sorting venue. She expressed her hope to participate in the Hạ Long City's marathon event again next year.
With a long-term vision and drawing on the expertise and experiences of leading professional organisations such as the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and World Athletics, the Hạ Long Bay Heritage Marathon has established itself as a pioneering race on the international marathon circuit. It has been recognised by Runner's World UK magazine as one of the 50 greatest races on earth.
The event's running course has been accurately measured and standardised by AIMS-certified experts. The route took runners through numerous stunning landscapes, connecting the cities of Hạ Long and Cẩm Phả, including a unique tunnel through the mountain in Cẩm Phả City. To ensure the utmost safety of the participants, one side of the tunnel was completely closed for the race.
The achievements of the runners in this event qualify them to register for any of the world's six most prestigious running events, namely the New York, Chicago, London, Boston, Tokyo, and Berlin marathons.
Muay Thai fighter Minh Phat wins world belt on home turf
Local fighter Truong Cao Minh Phat won the World Boxing Council (WBC) international belt on home soil after beating Iranian Mostafa Armand in the WBC Muay Thai World Title Fight event, which was held for the first time on November 19 in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Vietnamese fighter is No. 15 in the world rankings and enjoyed an impressive victory against Mostfa Armand of Iran, world’s No. 10, in the final of the men’s Super-Featherweight category to win the title.
Phat, 28, has therefore become the first Vietnamese fighter to secure a WBC world belt.
He won a silver medal at the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) and a bronze medal at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 32). He has recorded a total of nine wins and one loss in his Muay Thai pro career.
Phat won his WBC Muay Thai International Title's super featherweight (58.9kg) at the MTR: Rising Star event which took place in July, also in Ho Chi Minh City.
Also, on November 19, Huynh Hoang Phi, world No. 8, trounced Elamghari Ayoub of Morocco, world No. 13, for the championship belt of the men's bantamweight (55kg) category.
The WBC Muay Thai World Title Fight entitled, Muay Thai Rampage (MTR): Call of Honor, was organized for the first time in the nation, featuring strong local and international martial artists competing at the Saigon Sports Club.
The occasion also marks the first time that the country has successfully met the strict requirements to win the right to host a prestigious world title bout.
