In a significant move towards digital transformation, Vietnam will cease 2G services by September 2024, requiring network operators to transition their customers to 4G and 5G technologies.

The Ministry of Information and Communications has confirmed it will not re-allocate the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands to operators with remaining 2G-only subscribers after the deadline.

Currently, more than ten million 2G subscribers remain. Network operators are under pressure to transition these users to newer technologies within the next two months. Failure to do so will result in the Ministry withholding licenses for the critical 900MHz and 1800MHz bands.

Nguyen Thanh Phuc, Director of the Department of Telecommunications, emphasized the Ministry's firm stance on this issue, urging network operators to implement measures and policies that promote the shift to 4G and 5G.

Vu Thu Hien, Head of the Frequency Policy and Planning Department, highlighted that while the aim is to eliminate 2G-only subscribers by September 2024, early 3G and 4G smartphone users without the VoLTE feature can continue using the 2G network until September 2026. This interim period allows for a gradual transition, ensuring users have adequate time to adapt.

To facilitate this transition, network operators are offering financial support for purchasing smartphones. They are also preventing 2G-only phones from entering the network. Since March 2024, these initiatives have significantly reduced the number of 2G subscribers.

Viettel has proactively turned off 2G coverage in areas with low usage and analyzed customer behavior to create supportive policies, including discounts and free 4G phones for low-income households. MobiFone has already shut down 40% of its 2G stations and plans to complete the shutdown by the end of 2025. Vietnamobile and Gtel Mobile are also preparing for the 2G shutdown, with Vietnamobile planning a phased approach and Gtel Mobile already without 2G subscribers.

As Vietnam advances towards a fully digital future, the shift from 2G to 4G and 5G is essential for fostering innovation, improving connectivity, and driving national digital transformation.
