Minister of Natural Recourses and Environment Tran Hong Ha made the statement during his online talks on July 11 with UK Cabinet Minister and COP26 President Alok Kumar Sharma.

Ha said Vietnam has developed the national strategy on climate change for the period to 2050 which prioritises pooling resources for climate change response and greenhouse gas emission reduction for stages to 2030 and 2050, to ensure zero net emissions by 2050.

He briefed Sharma on Vietnam’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) update, which he said will stick to the 2020 plan with some additional contents to implement the country’s commitment at COP 26.

Following talks between Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, he said the parties have agreed on the appointment of the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and the Vietnamese Ambassador of Vietnam to the UK as political and technical representatives to deploy the contents so as to outline the roadmap and negotiation plan.

Minister Ha requested that COP26 President Alok Kumar Sharma lobby stakeholders and the G7 to soon identify financial support commitments for Vietnam to proactively implement the transition.

He also said that his ministry is drafting a plan for Vietnam to take part in COP27, and the plan will be submitted to the head of the government for consideration and approval in the near future.

COP26 President Sharma acknowledged Vietnam’s progress and affirmed the British Government would accompany and support Vietnam in achieving its goals committed at COP26 and towards COP27.

The two sides agreed to have face-to-face meetings to promote actions to fulfill climate change commitments.
