The Asian Football Confederation has announced a fine of USD12,500 to Vietnamese Football Federation after local fans set off flares at the Asian Games 2018 in Indonesia.
Many Vietnamese fans attended the Pakansari Stadium for the South Korea - Vietnam match on August 29. Several fans set off flares while the match was on.
The VFF will have to pay a USD12,500 fine in accordance with the AFC Disciplinary and Ethics Code.
If Vietnamese fans continue to set off flares, the fines will increase and Vietnam may face stricter punishments.
VFF also called for fans to not use flares especially at the coming AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 which will be held from November 8 to December 15.
Vietnam is in Group A with Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos. This is the last international tournament for Vietnam in 2018.
VFF Secretary Le Hoai Anh said, "Vietnam will participate in the AFF Cup, the final round of the Asian Games and some other tournaments so I hope the fans won’t affect anything. Using the mobile phone flashlights could be very nice and impressive."
VFF was previously fined USD11,000 after Vietnamese fans set off flares during an Asian Cup qualifier against Cambodia.
It was also fined USD38,000 in 2016 after several fans threw stones at Indonesia team's bus after being upset with the second semi-final match of the AFF Suzuki Cup.
Vietnam and Indonesia drew 2-2 in the second leg of the Suzuki Cup semi-final, with Indonesia going through on aggregate. Many fans blamed the Chinese referee for the result.
