According to the 2024 Internet and Internet Resources Report, recently published by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), domain names serve as the foundation for nearly all online activities and services.
Vietnam first connected its “.vn” domain to the global internet in April 1994, marking an important milestone in establishing its digital sovereignty. Over the past 30 years, the domain has evolved into a trusted, secure, and recognized digital identity for businesses, individuals, and government agencies.
As of 2024, the total number of “.vn” domain registrations has exceeded 630,000, ranking second in ASEAN, 10th in the Asia-Pacific region, and 40th globally - a six-place jump compared to 2020.
Regional adoption and nationwide expansion
By November 2024, 14 provinces and cities in Vietnam had surpassed 5,000 ‘.vn’ domain registrations each. Leading regions include: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Binh Duong, Dong Nai.
Recognizing the importance of online identity, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has launched a national program to promote the adoption of the “.vn” domain.
The initiative, running from 2024 to 2025, aims to increase the number of registered ‘.vn’ domains to 1 million, accelerating Vietnam’s digital transformation, e-government, and digital economy.
In recent years, VNNIC has worked with all 63 provincial Departments of Information and Communications to encourage individuals and organizations to register “.vn” domains for their businesses and personal branding.
The center has also collaborated with:
The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to promote ‘id.vn’ as a unique online identity for young Vietnamese and youth organizations.
Vietnam E-Commerce Association (VECOM) to introduce the Unitour program, reaching 25 universities and helping students understand the benefits of establishing an online presence using a “.vn” domain.
Nearly 70,000 new domain registrations under emerging categories
As part of efforts to modernize the “.vn” domain system, VNNIC has expanded its domain offerings to include:
id.vn (personal identity)
biz.vn (business and commerce)
io.vn (technology and startups)
ai.vn (artificial intelligence and innovation)
Since the introduction of these new domains, nearly 70,000 registrations have been recorded. "This reflects a strong shift in digital adoption, as more individuals and businesses recognize the strategic value of owning a ‘.vn’ domain in the digital era," a VNNIC representative stated.
To encourage wider adoption, Decree 147 has introduced fee exemptions and reductions for certain groups:
Vietnamese citizens aged 18-23 can register ‘id.vn’ with waived or reduced registration and maintenance fees.
Businesses and household enterprises with legal operating licenses can receive fee reductions when registering ‘biz.vn’ for their commercial activities.
These incentives aim to support small businesses and young entrepreneurs, making it easier for them to establish a strong online presence with Vietnam’s national domain.
With over 630,000 active domain names and growing, Vietnam’s digital presence is expanding rapidly. By 2025, the goal is to surpass 1 million ‘.vn’ domain registrations, solidifying Vietnam’s position as a leading digital economy in Southeast Asia.
