In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar, Vietnam swiftly deployed two emergency flights carrying personnel and supplies to support the rescue and recovery efforts.
The missions were operated by Vietjet, using its modern Airbus A330 and A321 aircraft, to transport specialized teams from the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of National Defense.
On the afternoon of March 30, flights VJ2875 and VJ2877 took off from Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport, carrying 106 military and police rescue officers, trained K9 units, and over 60 tons of humanitarian cargo -including medical equipment, food, and other emergency supplies - bound for Yangon, Myanmar.
According to Vietjet, the selected flight crew and support staff were among the most experienced in both flight operations and emergency humanitarian missions. Ground handling teams also worked swiftly to ensure the relief flights were loaded and dispatched under tight timelines.
"Always ready for special missions, Vietjet promptly prepared and successfully operated two flights carrying Vietnam’s emergency rescue forces to Myanmar, demonstrating urgency and responsibility in the face of disaster,” said Đinh Việt Phương, CEO of Vietjet.
Once the flights landed in Yangon, the rescue teams - comprising officers from both the police and military -immediately began unloading cargo and mobilizing toward affected areas. Their tasks include searching for missing persons, providing medical assistance, and aiding with post-disaster reconstruction.
On March 28, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, with its epicenter located 16 km northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10 km. The quake caused widespread devastation - collapsing buildings, destroying infrastructure, and impacting neighboring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam, where tremors were also felt.
According to Myanmar authorities, the disaster has left more than 1,600 people dead, nearly 3,500 injured, and hundreds still missing.
Vietjet, known for its community-driven values, has a strong track record of participating in humanitarian missions. The airline previously operated relief flights in response to the 2018 Indonesia earthquake and tsunami, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013, and played a critical logistical role in Vietnam’s pandemic response, transporting medical personnel and supplies across the country.
As one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic carriers, Vietjet continues to uphold its commitment to social responsibility through meaningful action in times of need.
