Vietnam is studying the possibility of joining the OECD as part of its efforts to enhance global economic integration, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh revealed during a meeting with OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh commended the growing cooperation between Vietnam and the OECD.
He emphasized Vietnam’s interest in learning from the OECD’s experiences and policy recommendations to enhance its competitiveness and align with global governance standards.
The Prime Minister requested OECD support in helping Vietnam meet the organization’s standards and procedures for membership, as well as facilitating the participation of Vietnamese experts in the OECD Secretariat.
Secretary-General Mathias Cormann praised Vietnam’s outstanding role as Co-Chair of the OECD Southeast Asia Program and expressed readiness to support Vietnam with policy advice and its efforts to participate in the OECD Declaration on International Investment and Multinational Enterprises.
Both sides agreed to enhance collaboration between the OECD and Vietnam’s ministries and agencies to boost the effectiveness of their partnership.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also invited Secretary-General Cormann to attend the 4th Partnering for Green Growth and Global Goals (P4G) Summit in April and the 16th UNCTAD Ministerial Conference in October, both to be held in Vietnam.
Collaboration with the Netherlands
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also met with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof to discuss trade and investment ties.
The Netherlands is Vietnam’s second-largest trading partner in Europe and the largest EU investor in the country. Despite global trade challenges, bilateral trade between the two nations reached 13.77 billion USD in 2024, a 26% increase from 2023.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the Netherlands’ long-standing friendship and urged early ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). He also called for support in removing the EU’s “yellow card” on Vietnam’s fisheries.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof acknowledged the Netherlands’ interest in investing in semiconductor production in Vietnam and reaffirmed the royal family’s desire to visit Vietnam soon.
Prime Minister Chinh highlighted the importance of fostering the integration of the Vietnamese community in the Netherlands and invited Prime Minister Schoof to attend the P4G Summit.
Engagement with the World Economic Forum (WEF)
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also met Professor Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF).
The Prime Minister praised Professor Schwab’s vision in establishing the WEF as a leading global economic forum and called for collaboration in fostering innovation and technology development in Vietnam.
Professor Schwab expressed confidence in Vietnam’s growing geopolitical significance and its potential to become an economic powerhouse in Asia.
He acknowledged the contributions of Vietnam’s youth and their role in driving innovation and economic growth. Professor Schwab accepted invitations to attend the P4G Summit and UNCTAD 16 in Hanoi in 2025.
