On January 20, U.S. time, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States, becoming only the second person in history to serve non-consecutive terms.

To mark this occasion, General Secretary To Lam, President Luong Cuong, and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent congratulatory messages on January 21, reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to the strategic partnership with the U.S.

The Vietnamese leaders emphasized the importance of the Vietnam-U.S. relationship, expressing confidence that under President Trump’s leadership, bilateral ties would continue to grow robustly.

They reiterated their dedication to principles of mutual respect for independence, sovereignty, and political systems, aiming for peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region and globally.

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the U.S. (1995–2025) and two years since the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan also sent a congratulatory letter to Vice President James David Vance.

Strengthening bilateral ties

In a phone call in November 2024, following Trump’s election victory, General Secretary To Lam discussed positive developments in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

Vietnam expressed its readiness to foster stable and long-term relations with the U.S., focusing on economic, trade, and investment collaborations in areas of mutual interest.

President Trump acknowledged the achievements in bilateral relations and emphasized the significance of economic and trade cooperation. He also praised the contributions of the Vietnamese-American community and shared fond memories of his past visits to Vietnam.

During the conversation, General Secretary To Lam invited President Trump to visit Vietnam, an invitation he gladly accepted. In return, President Trump invited General Secretary To Lam to visit the U.S. at a suitable time.

As President, Trump visited Vietnam twice, in 2017 and 2019. His 2017 visit included participation in the APEC Summit in Da Nang and a state visit to Vietnam. In 2019, he attended the U.S.-North Korea Summit in Hanoi.
