The General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) and the General Command of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) launched their hotline on August 15 to exchange views on issues of mutual concern.
Accepting invitations from General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, President To Lam will undertake state visits to Laos and Cambodia from July 11 to 13.
“We do not agree with provocative opinions and comments, undermining the good sentiments between the Vietnamese and Cambodian people, and criticizing their leaders,” the spokeswoman stressed.
Vietnam hopes that Cambodia will continue to closely coordinate with VN and other countries in the Mekong area to share full information and assess the detailed impacts of this project.
Building the Funan Techo canal is a legitimate investment activity for the socio-economic development of Cambodia. Vietnam and Cambodia need to cooperate sincerely to enhance the economic development of both countries.
Vietnam is greatly interested in Funan Techo canal project and respects the legitimate interests of Cambodia in accordance with the 1995 Mekong Agreement, relevant regulations of the Mekong River Commission.
Vietnam has expressed its hope that Cambodia will soon provide information on Cambodia’s Funan-Techo canal project and join hands in assessing its impacts and seeking solutions to them.
The US$1.7-billion canal will be approximately 180km long, passing through four provinces with a total population of 1.6 million people living on both sides, connecting the capital city Phnom Penh with its southern coast (near Vietnam's Kien Giang).
