Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam’s first university, is a symbol of Vietnamese knowledge and education. With its ancient architecture and deep historical significance, the site connects Hanoi’s past and present, showcasing Vietnam’s dedication to learning and culture. Over the years, it has become a must-visit cultural destination for both domestic and international visitors.

During the visit, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon learned about the history of Vietnam’s first university and its role in fostering the nation’s Confucian traditions of learning and respect for teachers.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highlighted Vietnam’s strong emphasis on education and training as a national priority, noting that New Zealand is a global leader in education and that bilateral cooperation in this field has become a cornerstone of their relationship.

The two leaders visited historical landmarks such as Dai Trung Gate, Khue Van Pavilion, Dai Thanh Sanctuary, and the Stelae of Doctors. They also paid tribute to Chu Van An, a revered educator symbolizing Vietnam’s scholarly traditions.

During the tour, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon struck the ceremonial thunder drum in the Thai Hoc Courtyard, followed by a demonstration of Vietnamese calligraphy by master Nguyen Thanh Tung, who wrote the words “Success” and “Prosperity.”

Amid the serene courtyard of Van Mieu, the two leaders shared a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony, accompanied by a performance of Quan Ho Bac Ninh folk singing. As the melody of "Moi Nuoc Moi Trau" (Invitation for Tea and Betel) filled the air, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh offered Prime Minister Christopher Luxon a beautifully prepared betel quid, a gesture symbolizing Vietnamese hospitality. The New Zealand leader eagerly accepted and tried the betel nut, embracing the unique cultural experience.

Continuing their immersion in Vietnamese traditions, Prime Minister Luxon tried his hand at playing a traditional Vietnamese instrument, experiencing firsthand the rich musical heritage of the country. To commemorate the visit, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh presented his New Zealand counterpart with a photo book documenting the historic trip.

This special cultural exchange strengthened the bond between Vietnam and New Zealand, showcasing the deep respect both nations hold for each other’s traditions and values.
