Vietnam and Japan’s 50-year diplomatic journey is explored in a new academic book, providing valuable insights for researchers, educators, and policymakers.

A milestone in Vietnam-Japan relations

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has officially released 50 Years of Vietnam-Japan Relations (1973–2023), a comprehensive academic book that explores the historical evolution of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The book was developed under the "JICA Chair" program in collaboration with scholars from the Institute for Northeast Asian Studies at the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), Professor Furuta Motoo, President of Vietnam Japan University, and Professor Emeritus Tran Van Tho of Waseda University.

The publication is expected to contribute significantly to expanding research resources on Japan in Vietnam. At the book launch ceremony, Japan’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Ito Naoki, and VASS Vice President, Dang Xuan Thanh, joined around 100 researchers and educators specializing in Japanese studies and language instruction. The event also featured a ceremonial book donation.

Enhancing academic resources for Japanese studies in Vietnam

In the coming months, the book will be distributed free of charge to key universities and research institutions in Vietnam through the Institute for Northeast Asian Studies.

This initiative aims to support academic research and education, providing scholars and students with valuable historical and policy insights.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Ito highlighted the significance of the book in fostering bilateral relations. "In 2023, Japan and Vietnam elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world. This book serves as a vital guidepost for future cooperation, drawing from the lessons of our 50-year history," he said.

VASS Vice President Dang Xuan Thanh emphasized the book’s academic value.

"This publication not only summarizes the key events in Japan-Vietnam relations over the past five decades but also serves as an invaluable resource for researchers and educators," he noted.

A structured approach to 50 years of diplomacy

The book examines Vietnam-Japan relations through the lens of global and regional international dynamics. It divides the 50-year period from 1973 to 2023 into three distinct phases, analyzing the evolution of political-diplomatic, economic, and socio-cultural interactions. It also assesses achievements, challenges, and policy implications for the future of bilateral relations.

Currently, Vietnam lacks a comprehensive introductory text on the history of Vietnam-Japan relations. The publication of this book is therefore expected to fill a critical gap in academic research and education, providing scholars, policymakers, and students with a well-structured resource on one of Vietnam’s most important diplomatic partnerships.
