Vietnam aims for gold at first Chinese Chess world tournament
Vietnam will participate in the first World Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Federation Tournament from August 29-31 in Berlin, Germany.
Coach Nguyen Thanh Tung said Vietnam would send their five masters, including former Asian champion Ngo Thi Lan Huong, to the first ever team event where they have their eye on the gold medal.
There will be 15 countries and territories vying to win in Berlin. Besides Vietnam, other powerhouses competing are China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Singapore.
The Vietnamese will enter the Asian championships in China after the German competition.
Tien Minh cruises into third round of BWF
Top Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh handily defeated long-time Spanish rival Pablo Abian 2-1 to advance to the third round of the 2014 BWF World Badminton Championships.
Minh decimated Abian 21-7 in the first set, but the Spanish rival fought back hard in the second set beating the Vietnamese player 21-19, tying up the match..
However, the third set was a rout 21-10 in favourof Tien Minh.
In the next round, the Vietnamese top star faces off with Danish 14th seed Viktor Axelsen.
In the women’s event, Vietnamese player Vu Thi Trang meets Chinese 2nd seed Shixian Wang in the third round of play.
Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open 2014 to kick off in HCM City
The Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open 2014 is set to get underway in Ho Chi Minh City on September 1, the organizing board announced on August 27.
The tournament taking place from September 1-9, is expected to attract 272 players from 15 countries and territories, competing in five titles, namely men’singles, women’singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Nguyen Tien Minh-top Vietnamese player is only seeded No 3 at the tournament, while Rumbaka from Indonesia is seeded No 1.
