Update news university lecturers
Before launching Project 89 that aimed to produce 7,300 more lecturers with a doctoral degree, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) ran two projects on preparing human resources with doctoral and master’s degrees, worth trillions of VND.
Only one candidate has been found not to meet the standards for a professor title in 2017. However, concern about the quality of professors/associate professors remains.
The public says the plan on 9,000 PhDs with a budget of VND12 trillion is unnecessary and costly, while experts say the VND12 trillion is so low that it cannot ensure the success of the program.
“It is unreasonable to say Vietnam is suffering a ‘professor oversupply’,” said Tran Van Nhung, secretary general of the State’s Professorship Council.
University lecturers must spend at least one-third of their academic year time on scientific research, a circular newly released by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has stipulated.
VietNamNet Bridge - A Higher Education Update written by professors from leading American universities said that low salaries, too many teaching hours, and modest income from scientific research projects remained problems in Vietnam’s universities.
