Untreated industrial wastewater pollutes a river branch in Duong Noi Ward, Ha Dong District, Ha Noi.

Fabric manufacturer Nguyen Trung Cuong will have to pay a fine of some VND230 million ($10,200) and its operations will be suspended for six months.

The production units of Nguyen Ba Khoa and Nguyen Ba Chinh will be fined VND266 million ($11,800) and VND220 million ($9,700) respectively.

Fines of VND158 million ($7,000) and VND151 million ($6,700) will also be imposed on the Huy Phat Joint Stock Company and the Nguyen Trung Tuat production unit, respectively.

The committee also requested the production units to take responsibility and apply measures to clean the polluted river.

According to the investigation undertaken by the Natural Resources and Environment Division of Ha Dong District, the indicators of wastewater at the five production units all exceeded the threshold and none of the units had wastewater treatment systems, deputy chief of the district secretariat Vu Hoang Tam told vietnamnet.vn.

The condition of the river was reported to the district at the end of last year. The river’s water had turned red and had a foul-smelling odour due to the untreated wastewater from the production units, according to the report.
