After the Kitchen God’s Day, the 23rd day of the last lunar month,
farmers from Dong Nai and Lam Dong provinces group up on the sidewalk of
Cach Mang Thang Tam road in Tan Binh district, HCM City, to sell
phrynium leaves, bamboo strings and moulds to make banh chung and banh
tet (traditional rice cakes).
The market occupies the entire pavement of over 500m long, but the
local government ignores it because the leaf market opens only once a
year and offers the unique products for the Tet holiday.
The market opens from midnight.
The leaf sellers sleep at the market. They will return home on the afternoon of the last day of the lunar year.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tai, 40, from Tan Phu district, Dong Nai province, said he has sold leaves here for many years.
