General Thanh gave the decisions, which were approved by President Truong Tan Sang, to appoint the two first military officers of Vietnam as the liaison officers at the UN mission in South Sudan.
The launch of this center is associated with an important mission – Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping activities.
"The policy of participating in UN peacekeeping activities shows the international responsibility of the Vietnam People’s Army and Vietnamese people to the international community to address the instability and security challenges towards building a peaceful, stable and prosperous world," said Defense Minister - General Phung Quang Thanh at the ceremony.
At the ceremony, General Thanh gave the decisions, which were approved by President Truong Tan Sang, to appoint the two first military officers of Vietnam as liaison officers at the UN mission in South Sudan. They are Lt. Col. Mac Tran Duc Trong and Lt. Col. Tran Nam.
On behalf of the Government, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam stressed that, with its bloody history of many wars against foreign invaders, Vietnam always yearns for peace.
"Peace can only be created when acts that are unilateral and contrary to international law are rejected. Peace can only be preserved when all countries, big or small, respect the independence and sovereignty of each other and all share the responsibility to preserve peace, stability, cooperation and development by practical actions," he said.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Field Support Ameerah Haq was present at the event. She hailed the establishment of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Center as an important step in the relationship between Vietnam and the UN peacekeeping force, opening a new page in its relations with the UN.
"The establishment of the center is the highest commitment of Vietnam with the joint efforts of the whole world. Vietnam is not only considered as a global example of poverty reduction and sustainable development. With the establishment of this center, we look forward to seeing the professional creative dynamism of Vietnam shown to the whole world in peacekeeping," she said.
The Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr. Hiroshi Fukada, appreciated Vietnam’s effort and courage in expressing its responsibility to peace and stability in the world.
