The captain of QNg 9016156-TS trawler was Nguyen Van Thao, 43, a resident of Binh Son District's Binh Chanh Commune in the central Quang Nam Province. The trawler had 14 sailors on board.
All the crew members are reportedly in stable condition and the trawler is undamaged.
Engine failure reportedly forced the trawler to go adrift 90 nautical miles east-northeast off Nha Trang in the central province, when it was returning to the mainland after fishing in Truong Sa (Spratly) waters on Saturday night.
The crew members tried to rectify the problem but did not succeed. Meanwhile, food and fuel aboard ran out. There were no vessels operating in the area where the trawler was stranded amid strong winds and heavy rain. Captain Thao then made a distress call.
On receiving the news, the Nha Trang MRCC on Monday morning dispatched the SAR27-01 boat to rescue the trawler and its men. The boat reached the trawler at noon on the same day, and towed it to shore.
Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang sent words of encouragement and gifts to the crew members of the trawler.
