Noong De is home to 113 Thai ethnic families. For generations, Noong De people have lived on the mountains and forests, mainly by slash-and-burn farming. Women also have brocade weaving, a traditional profession imbued with Thai ethnic identity.
The Thai Khang ethnic people in Noong De village have a relatively prosperous life compared to people in other communes in the district because in addition to farming on the fields, they also have a number of traditional occupations.
Thai Khang people attach great importance to traditional weaving. Young girls are guided by their mothers and grandmothers to gradually become familiar with spinning and weaving. Weaving has become associated with local women as an indispensable habit in daily life.
Brocade products (skirts, shirts, scarves, bags, wallets, belts) of Noong De women are always favored by customers near and far because of their good quality, beautiful designs, sophistication in decoration and harmony in color coordination... The weaving skills of local women are increasingly improved.
But the market for weaving products of Noong De village is still limited as it is within Ky Son and a few neighboring districts only. Some products are sold to tourists.
Although it has been recognized as a craft village, Noong De still does not have a centralized production workshop and a space for product display. Meanwhile, the village is not far from Nam Can International Border Gate, and is next to a strategic route for economic exchange and tourism and service development.
Joining hands to preserve the brocade weaving profession in Noong De village, the Craft Link Center has assisted the local community through a project to develop handicrafts since 1999.
